Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial is underway in Plymouth, Mass. The 35-year-old woman is charged with three counts of murder for the strangling deaths of her three children – ages 5, 3, and 8 months. Clancy is present – bound to a wheelchair after jumping from her home’s second-story window in an alleged suicide attempt. Her defense lawyer claims she was insane at the time – suffering from postpartum psychosis and could not appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. She faces life in prison without parole if she is convicted. These are live updates from the courtroom. Times listed are EDT. Please excuse typos.

10:24 a.m. Group Question #6: Any reason you cannot reach a verdict based on the law? No response.

Group Question #5: Constitutional principles – The defendant has the presumption of innocence; the Commonwealth must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The defendant has no obligation to testify. The defendant has a mental disease or defect and she was unable to conform her conduct to the principles of the law. Do any jurors have any difficulty accepting these principles? No response.

Group question #4: Do you have any physical problem that would affect your ability to sit? Jurors 209, 160, 196, 143, 154, 233, 176, 174, 129, 234 respond “yes.”

10:11 a.m. The judge tells potential jurors the alleged crime took place on or about Jan. 24, 2023, when the defendant strangled her three children with exercise bands in the basement of their home. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts alleges this was done with extreme premeditation. Defendant is anticipated that she will present an insanity defense. Judge reiterates that this is a formal accusation, but is not evidence. The jury will decide whether the Commonwealth has proven its case. The defendant has pleaded not guilty.

10:06 a.m. Clerk calls the case and asks the prospective jurors to stand and take an oath. Judge Sullivan instructs the jurors. He tells them he will give a statement of the case, allow the attorneys to introduce themselves, will give an estimated length of the trial, which will be followed by group questions. If they answer “yes” to any of the questions, they will raise a red card. Jurors will then be excused to answer a questionnaire and review the witness list.

10:05 a.m. About 90 jurors have assembled in the courtroom. Judge Sullivan takes the bench. Lindsay Clancy sits next to her attorney at the defense table.

9:25 a.m. We’re in a lull as we wait for a new group of prospective jurors to be escorted into the courtroom. The judge will instruct them on what to expect and ask a series of questions to the group before they are sent back to fill out the questionnaire and review the witness list.

8:58 a.m. Jury selection is expected to resume shortly. Judge William F. Sullivan seated five jurors yesterday and is looking to seat a total of 18 jurors, including 6 alternates. All prospective jurors will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and review a lengthy witness list.
