DAY 21: Testimony ends, new sentencing option for Lindsay Clancy and soon to the jury

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial is now on the brink of going to the jury — and tonight on Courtroom Insider, Nate Eaton is breaking down a dramatic final day of testimony and the battle over what jurors will be allowed to consider.

The Commonwealth rested its case today after its final expert testified that Clancy was criminally responsible when she killed her three children.

Dr. Gregory Saathoff pointed to what he described as methodical planning, the narrow window while Patrick Clancy was away from the house, the locked door and a phone call Lindsay returned to her husband as evidence she understood right from wrong and could control her actions.

But the defense pushed back hard, questioning Saathoff about Lindsay’s severe insomnia, medication side effects, suicidal thoughts and repeated attempts to get help.

There were also major developments after testimony ended. The judge agreed to give a manslaughter instruction, meaning jurors will have another potential verdict to consider beyond the murder charges and the insanity defense. Closing arguments, jury instructions and the start of deliberations are expected tomorrow.
