CHALLIS — An Ammon man was killed in a semi crash near Challis Thursday morning.
The 51-year-old was hauling a tractor-trailer loaded with gravel northbound on US Highway 93 around 10:35 a.m.
The truck drove off the right side of the road into a borrow pit, according to Idaho State Police. Investigators say the driver tried to get the vehicle back on the highway.
“The tractor returned to the road, but the trailer was still in the borrow pit when the tractor and trailer became detached,” an ISP news release says. “The tractor rolled once and came to rest on its wheels. The trailer overturned onto its top.”
The driver died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to ISP.
The crash remains under investigation.
