POCATELLO — Parents and caregivers concerned about vaping among young people can learn how to recognize the warning signs and help kids avoid nicotine addiction during a free virtual class next month.

Southeastern Idaho Public Health will host “What Parents Should Know About E-cigarettes and Vaping” on Sept. 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. via Microsoft Teams.

The class is designed for parents, caregivers and other trusted adults and will focus on the health risks associated with e-cigarettes and vaping products, along with practical ways to prevent and address nicotine use among youth.

Participants will learn how to recognize signs that a young person may be vaping, communicate effectively about nicotine use and intervene when there are concerns. The class will also cover strategies for preventing addiction and resources available to young people who want to quit.

“We all want to keep our children safe and healthy, but navigating today’s challenges can feel overwhelming,” said Chessie Meyer, Youth Cessation Program Coordinator. “This class is designed to give families the knowledge, tools and confidence they need to have meaningful conversations about vaping, recognize warning signs and support young people in making healthy choices.”

Meyer said the goal is for families to leave the class feeling better informed and equipped to address vaping and nicotine use.

Participants will also be able to ask questions and interact with the presenter during the virtual session.

The class is free and open to the public. Registration is available at Southeastern Idaho Public Health’s website. Those with questions can contact Meyer at 208-478-6300 or cmeyer@siph.id.gov.
