Man in prison dies after assault, Idaho Department of Correction officials say

BOISE (Idaho Statesman) — An incarcerated man died from injuries sustained in an assault that happened in a Boise-area prison this week, according to a statement shared on social media by the Idaho Department of Correction.
Officials said the 66-year-old man had “life-threatening” injuries from the assault, which happened Wednesday at the minimum- and medium-security Idaho State Correctional Center south of Boise. The man has not been publicly identified.
According to the IDOC post, paramedics attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m.
Department of Correction officials said Idaho State Police are investigating.
The death marks the 12th in-custody death for the department in 2026.
