‘Learn our roots and culture,’ community invited to two-day celebration of Mexico’s Independence day

IDAHO FALLS — For the second time, a local business is inviting community members to its two-day celebration to learn about Mexico’s Independence Day.
Calakas Tacos and Miches co-owner Liliana Sanchez told EastIdahoNews.com that the celebration will be on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Waterfront, 1220 Event Center Drive.
The event will start at 2 p.m. and run until 8 p.m., with multiple vendors, food trucks, activities and a car/truck show for attendees to enjoy.
Multiple bands will also perform, including Alvaro y su Tecnobada Vallarta, Los Beristains and DJ Guero.
Sanchez said that last year, they estimated about 5,000 community members came out throughout the day. She plans to have around the same number come through this year.
“The purpose of it is to unite our community to make it bigger and stronger,” Sanchez said. “Go out and break the routine from every day and enjoy the music and enjoy our celebration and learn from our celebrations.”
Activities will include a mechanical bull, clowns, and a contest for the best Grito.
El Grito de Dolores, or the Cry of Dolores, marks the start of Mexico’s war for independence from Spain. This has been a tradition to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, where the president of Mexico recites El Grito de Dolores.
While Mexico’s Independence Day is technically celebrated on September 16, Sanchez said the planned celebration on Sunday is to ensure community members have a chance to come out and enjoy the event.
However, on Wednesday, residents will have another chance to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day.
Starting right after 5 p.m., the second day of the celebration will be held at the Idaho Falls Greenbelt Bandshell, located at 755 Memorial Drive.
Sanchez said that the same musical performers will be at both days, and food trucks will also be around.
“Sunny, rain, snow. However, the weather, we will be going,” Sanchez said. “We just want to invite the community to join us and to learn from our roots and our celebrations.”
