Man dies after hitting elk near Utah-Idaho border

PORTAGE, Utah — A Pocatello man died Monday night after his car struck an elk on Interstate 15 near the Utah-Idaho border.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway north of Portage, Utah, according to Idaho State Police.
The 66-year-old Pocatello man was driving a 2022 BMW Z4 north when he collided with on the road. The driver died at the scene.
Both northbound lanes of I-15 were blocked for about an hour while emergency crews responded. The right lane then reopened, while the left lane remained closed for another two and a half hours.
Idaho State Police is investigating the crash. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Oneida County EMS and Idaho Transportation Department assisted at the scene.
