IDAHO FALLS — EastIdahoNews.com is looking back at what life was like during the week of September 21 to September 27 in east Idaho history.

1900-1925

BURLEY — A disastrous fire broke out in a new school building in Burley, The Burley Herald reported on September 25, 1920.

The building was under construction and was set to open Oct. 1, 1920.

Workmen discovered the fire around noon. Firefighters responded but found there wasn’t enough water pressure for their hose to work.

In the meantime, people formed a line and passed down buckets of water hand-by-hand in an effort to put the fire out.

The fire was eventually knocked out but the blaze gutted the east wing and did $20,000 worth of damage.

1926-1950

GRACE — An 18-year-old woman died after saving her younger sister, the Idaho Falls Post Register reported on Sept. 21, 1932.

Maria Tarbet and her sister Maxine were riding on a horse when it became frightened after seeing a car. The animal took off running and Maria turned into the saddle, lifted her sister from the horse and dropped her to the ground.

Maria then lost her balance and fell to the ground. She suffered a fractured skull and broken ribs. Maria died an hour after the incident.

1951-1975

IDAHO FALLS — A local mayor proclaimed that “Kids Day” would be held, the Idaho Falls Post Register reported on Sept. 21, 1951.

Idaho Falls mayor Ed Fanning proclaimed “Kid’s Day” would take place in conjunction with the nation in celebrating the Kiwanis sponsored observance.

There were several events planned for children that would happen throughout the day. There was going to be a parade, a free movie and a bicycle rodeo.

1976-2000

POCATELLO — A 15-year-old ex-Idaho State Journal paper boy was charged with embezzlement, the Idaho State Journal reported on Sept. 21, 1977.

The youth was accused of collecting cash and checks from 27 route customers in March without turning the money into the Journal or to a previous newspaper carrier.

A juvenile hearing was set to take place, but in the meantime, he had been released to his mother.
