Science in action: Grand Teton Council invites community to annual STEM-A-RAMA event

IDAHO FALLS — The Grand Teton Council of Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America) invites community members to a free annual event to see science in action and get hands-on with STEM careers this Saturday.
Since 2019, the annual STEM-A-RAMA event has brought numerous organizations together in one location, allowing local youth to learn more about trades that involve science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and be held at the Grand Teton Council’s office, 3910 South Yellowstone Highway.
“We want all families to come and enjoy a variety of different activities that promote STEAM,” Grand Teton Council District Director Elias Lopez said.
Some of the organizations at this year’s event are the National Guard, United States Marine Corps, the robotics team from Driggs High School, Idaho State University and the Idaho National Laboratory Fire Department.
Sponsors outside the building will include Eagle Rock Sanitation, which will offer rides in its barrel train, and XP Gaming, which will have a gaming trailer for kids.
Food vendors will also be there, including Grandpa’s Southern Barbecue and Park Avenue Grill.
Lopez said there will be door prizes for the kids who attend the event.
To encourage their participation, kids will receive a “passport” to fill out as they interact with event sponsors. Once filled, kids can earn prizes, including an Orbit Scooter, Legos, Star Wars and other toys.
“It’s really important for us to get these kids outside doing things and just seeing what’s available to them because they’re very intelligent, they’re smart kids, and we want them to be successful in life,” Lopez said.
This event also serves as a recruiting opportunity for Scouting America.
Lopez said the group is always looking for families to volunteer or to have their children join.
Overall, Lopez said this event is a great way for the whole family to have fun and enjoy being outside while the weather is nice.
