BOISE — Idaho students have a chance to put their creativity to work by naming the snowplows that help keep the state’s roads clear during winter.

The Idaho Transportation Department is launching its third annual “Name a Snowplow” contest, inviting students in grades 6 through 12 to submit original names for the massive machines.

Entries will be accepted throughout October, with winners announced by the end of the year. Classrooms can work with their teachers to submit ideas, and homeschooled students are also encouraged to participate.

Two snowplows in each of ITD’s six regions will receive winning names, selected through voting by ITD employees. The names will be displayed directly on the plows.

Each winning classroom will also get a visit from its snowplow and driver, who will give students a presentation about winter driving safety.

ITD officials say the contest is designed to make learning about winter road safety fun and engaging, especially for students who are getting closer to driving age.

“Our snowplow drivers take tremendous pride in keeping Idaho’s roads safe, and this contest gives students a fun way to connect with that work while learning about winter driving safety,” said Laila Kral, ITD’s chief deputy.

The department also reminds drivers to stay alert, slow down and be patient when sharing the road with snowplows during the winter months.

Teachers and homeschool families can find contest rules and participation details on the ITD website.
