REXBURG — There’s a new face of school spirit at Brigham Young University-Idaho, and he’s carrying some Viking history with him.
Thor the Viking was unveiled Friday night as part of the school’s annual Spirit Week. The announcement comes as BYU-Idaho celebrates its 25th anniversary.

The mascot is a blast from the past, as the Vikings were part of Ricks College tradition before the school’s transition in 2001.

Now, the university has a refreshed mascot designed to connect former Ricks College students with today’s BYU-Idaho community.
“Our team spent a lot of time talking to students, faculty and alumni to make sure we could introduce a mascot that would unify Ricks College alumni with generations of BYU-Idaho students both now and well into the future,” said Amy Renee, vice president of Student Life. “We look forward to adding to the energy and school spirit by introducing Thor the Viking.”

Thor will make appearances at New Student Orientation, Date Night and other campus events. The University Store has also launched an official collection featuring shirts, hoodies, hats, pennants and other spirit gear. You can check out the apparel here.
