BOISE (Idaho Statesman) – Check your pantry and empty your bread box.
A popular bakery item sold by a Boise-based grocery store chain is subject to a multi-state recall.
WinCo Foods pulled rolls from store shelves due to an undeclared allergen that can make people sick, according to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The recalled rolls were sold in seven states across the West, including Idaho, Oregon and Washington state.
Here’s what Idaho shoppers should know:
Which bread was recalled in Idaho? Why?
WinCo Foods in Boise recalled certain lots of its store-brand hoagie rolls due to undeclared sesame.
The supermarket chain said it initiated the recall after manufacturer United States Bakery, also known as Franz Bakery, “discovered the packaging did not declare sesame flour in the ingredient list and allergen statement.”
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame may risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” WinCo Foods said in a Thursday, Oct. 22, news release.
No illnesses have been reported so far, according to the recall notice.
How can I tell if I bought recalled rolls?
The recall impacts 16-ounce packages of WinCo Foods Hoagie Rolls marked with universal product code 2-70552-00649-2 and best-by dates of Sept. 10, 2026, to Nov. 3, 2026.
What are the health risks of an allergic reaction?
Going into anaphylaxis shock after being exposed to allergens could lead to deadly consequences, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Here are the symptoms of anaphylaxis shock:
- Hives
- Itchiness
- Wheezing and trouble breathing
- Weak and rapid heart rate
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness and fainting
“An anaphylactic reaction can be life-threatening,” the Mayo Clinic said. “It can stop your breathing or your heartbeat.”
What should I do if I bought recalled bread?
Do not to consume the recalled hoagie rolls if you are sensitive or allergic to sesame, WinCo Foods said.
You can receive a refund by returning the rolls to any WinCo Foods location.
