BLACKFOOT — A person over the age of 75 from Bingham County has died from an influenza-related illness, according to Southeastern Idaho Public Health.

The death marks eastern Idaho’s first influenza-associated death of the 2026-2027 flu season and the third in the state.

Idaho has averaged about 60 flu-related deaths annually over the past five seasons, with most deaths occurring among people over the age of 50, according to a news release from Southeastern Idaho Public Health.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause fever, headaches, fatigue, coughing and a sore throat. While many people recover within a few days, the virus can lead to serious complications and death.

People at higher risk of severe illness include adults over 50, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions and those living in long-term care facilities.

Health officials recommend that everyone 6 months and older receive an annual flu vaccine. Residents who have not yet been vaccinated can contact their health care provider, local public health district or pharmacy.

Other precautions include washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding close contact with sick people and staying home when ill.
