LIMA, Peru — More than 3,000 tarantulas — including eggs, baby spiders and species unknown to science — were found stuffed inside socks and hidden in the suitcases of three European travelers trying to leave Peru for Germany, authorities say.

The unusual wildlife trafficking operation was uncovered by Peru’s National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) and customs agents following an intelligence investigation, according to a news release.

The tarantulas were packed inside labeled socks and concealed in three suitcases belonging to two German citizens and one Polish citizen. Authorities intercepted the travelers as they were checking in for their flight.

Cora Suárez, a SERFOR wildlife control specialist, said the collection included spiders at different stages of development, from eggs to adults. Investigators also found several species, including some that have not yet been scientifically identified.

The spiders came from different parts of Peru. The three travelers now face criminal proceedings and according to scientific publications, one of the suspects is reportedly a well-known tarantula researcher.

Authorities believe the spiders were intended for private collections, scientific research or the exotic pet trade.

Officials are still identifying the spiders. Once evaluations are complete, they will be transferred to an authorized breeding facility.
