Obama Makes 90-Minute Phone Call to Putin on Tension in Ukraine
Published at(WASHINGTON) — President Obama spoke with his Russian counterpart on Saturday for about 90 minutes, expressing “deep concern” over Russia’s actions in regard to the situation in Ukraine.
Russia’s “violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity” is a “breach of international law,” Obama said. He urged Putin to de-escalate tensions and withdraw Russian forces back to bases and avoid further interference.
The United States will stop taking part in preparatory meetings for the G8 summit in Sochi, a satement from the White House said.
Additionally, Obama told the Russian president that Russia’s actions would “negatively impact Russia’s standing in the international community” and “lead to greater political and economic isolation.”
