Senior Digital News Editor

Website EastIdahoNews.com
Want to help lead one of the most successful independent local newsrooms in the country?
EastIdahoNews.com is looking for an experienced Digital News Editor to help lead daily coverage at one of the most successful independent local news organizations in the region.
This is not a sit-in-meetings-all-day editing job.
You’ll help decide what we cover. You’ll work with reporters on breaking news and major stories. You’ll write compelling headlines, manage our website and social platforms, and help shape journalism that can reach hundreds of thousands — and sometimes millions — of people.
You’ll also have a schedule that’s a little different from most newsroom jobs: Wednesday through Sunday, with Saturday and Sunday worked remotely from home.
If you love news, know a great story when you see one and want to play a meaningful role in a growing newsroom, we want to hear from you.
A Little About Us
EastIdahoNews.com is the No. 1 news website in eastern Idaho.
We’re locally owned, independent and based in Idaho Falls. Since launching in 2015, millions of people around the world have visited our website, which is approaching one billion page views.
Our audience extends far beyond our website. We have more than 215,000 Facebook followers and 615,000 YouTube subscribers, and our journalism regularly reaches audiences worldwide.
We’ve received dozens of journalism awards, including a national Edward R. Murrow Award, and our reporting is regularly featured by national television networks, websites and other media organizations.
But we’re still a local newsroom at heart.
We cover breaking news, crime, courts, government, schools, business, weather, community events and unforgettable stories about the people who call eastern Idaho home.
And we’re looking for someone who wants to help us make that coverage even better.
What You’ll Do
As our Digital News Editor, you’ll be one of the people helping steer EastIdahoNews.com every day.
You’ll work alongside our journalists in our Idaho Falls newsroom, editing stories, developing coverage, coaching reporters and helping determine what we should be covering next.
On weekends, you’ll work remotely from home, taking the lead on our digital coverage. You’ll monitor breaking news, publish and update stories, manage the website and social media, and find interesting and engaging stories our audience will want to read and share.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a journalist, not just a copy editor.
You should genuinely enjoy following the news. You should be curious about what’s happening in the world and especially interested in what’s happening in our community.
Our ideal candidate:
- Has at least two years of professional news experience.
- Has excellent news judgment.
- Is a strong writer and editor.
- Can write compelling, conversational digital headlines without crossing into clickbait.
- Understands breaking news and can make good decisions quickly.
- Can juggle several developing stories without losing track of details.
- Is comfortable working independently on weekends.
- Enjoys working with reporters and helping them improve their stories.
- Understands how people discover and consume news online.
- Is comfortable using social media as both a reporting tool and a way to distribute journalism.
- Takes accuracy, fairness and journalistic ethics seriously.
- Brings ideas to the table.
- Is dependable, curious, positive and enjoyable to work with.
Experience with WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, photography and basic video editing is helpful, but don’t let the lack of one of those skills stop you from applying.
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field is preferred, but professional newsroom experience and strong journalism skills matter more to us than having the perfect résumé.
If you have at least two years of news experience and believe you’re ready for this role, we want to hear from you.
Salary & Schedule
The salary range for this position is $55,000–$60,000 per year, depending on experience.
The regular schedule is Wednesday through Sunday:
Wednesday–Friday: Work from our Idaho Falls newsroom
Saturday–Sunday: Work remotely from home
Monday–Tuesday: Off
For the right journalist currently living outside eastern Idaho, relocation reimbursement is available to help with the move to Idaho Falls.
Why east Idaho?
Here’s another part of the job that’s hard to fit on a résumé: where you get to live.
Our newsroom is in Idaho Falls, a growing community surrounded by some of the most spectacular places in the country.
Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park are practically in our backyard. Jackson Hole is a short drive away. So are ski resorts, hiking and mountain biking trails, world-class fishing, rivers, lakes, hot springs, camping and more than 10,000 acres of sand dunes.
