Committed to the well-being of its members and communities, Select Health shares a mission with Intermountain Health: helping people live their healthiest lives possible.
Time is running out for Idaho residents to secure health insurance for 2025. The open enrollment period ends Dec. 16, offering a limited opportunity to choose a plan that meets your health care needs and budget.
Health insurance is more than just coverage for doctor visits. It serves as a financial safety net, covering services like preventive care, mental health support, and chronic conditions.
Protect your health and finances
Life can be unpredictable, and unexpected illnesses or injuries can bring not only emotional stress but significant financial strain. Health insurance provides a buffer against these challenges.
“Going without insurance can lead to substantial financial hardship and limit access to quality care when it’s needed most,” said Trent Nate, Idaho Market vice president for Select Health. “Securing coverage is essential for both personal health and financial stability.”
Coverage for chronic conditions and mental health
For those managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, health insurance helps to provide access to essential treatments and medications that would otherwise be overwhelming without financial help from your health plan.
“Living with a chronic condition is difficult enough without the added stress of unmanageable medical bills,” Nate said. “Health insurance helps to ensure essential care is both accessible and affordable.”
Mental health coverage is just as vital. Many plans, including those offered by Select Health, provide access to therapy, medications, and inpatient services. Most Select Health Individual plans also include virtual mental health care at no out-of-pocket cost when members use in-network providers.
“We’re seeing a positive shift in mental health coverage, making it easier for Idaho residents to seek the help they need,” said Nate. “These improvements are breaking down financial barriers that have long prevented many from accessing important care.”
The importance of preventive care
Preventive care, such as vaccines and health screenings, helps detect health issues early. Most health insurance plans cover these services with little or no cost, making it easier to stay proactive about your health.
“At Select Health, we want our members to live the healthiest lives possible,” Nate said. “Preventive care plays a vital role in catching issues early and maintaining overall well-being.”
Choosing the right plan
Choosing a health plan requires careful consideration. Assess your needs—routine visits, medications, or surgeries—and compare premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs to ensure the plan aligns with your health care and financial priorities.
“Open enrollment is the perfect time to reassess your current plan and make changes if it no longer fits your needs,” Nate said. “This is your chance to find the best option for the year ahead.”
Confirm that your preferred doctors and hospitals are in-network. For 2025, Select Health has expanded its Med Network in Idaho, adding coverage in Bannock, Caribou, Cassia, Minidoka and Power counties to provide care closer to home.
Added benefits for Idaho residents
When evaluating plans, take note of added benefits that go beyond standard coverage. Select Health offers features that enhance the member experience, including:
Wellness rewards: Select Health offers a Wellness Rewards Program, where you can earn rewards up to $240 per person and $580 per family each year for maintaining healthy habits like going to the gym or achieving daily step goals.
Intermountain Connect Care: Get care for common conditions like fever, joint pain, or minor burns via smartphone or computer, allowing you to see in-network providers virtually at $0 out-of-pocket cost on most plans.
Member advocates: Select Health’s Member Advocates help members find the right providers and specialists, including access to language services or help scheduling appointments.
Healthy beginnings: This program provides support for expectant mothers, especially those with high-risk pregnancies, by offering access to nurse care managers and free resources like pregnancy and childcare books.
Member discounts: Select Health members can access discounts on services such as LASIK, acupuncture, cosmetic dermatology, and more.
“These additional benefits can make a real difference for Idaho families,” Nate said. “They’re designed to provide extra value and support for overall well-being.”
Act before Dec. 16
The open enrollment period ends Dec. 16, with coverage taking effect Jan. 1. Outside this window, residents can only enroll if they experience a qualifying life event, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
“Don’t wait until it’s too late,” Nate urged. “Explore your options now and gain the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re covered.”
