Grant Ivins Johnson, 98, of Idaho Falls, passed away October 21, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his children and family, who cared for him and stood by him until the very end.

Grant, the youngest of eight children, was born August 09, 1928, to Gustav Henry and Esther Lanzen Johnson. Being the youngest of eight children, he quickly learned so much about farm life: sowing, tilling, harvesting the fields and reaping the rewards of hard, dusty work alongside his father, four brothers, and good neighbors. He grew to appreciate God and family. He had a special love of gardening, education, and grammar, having read the World Book Encyclopedia series by age 10. He attended Riverside School and graduated from Idaho Falls High School. He loved all the wonderful family reunions and gatherings and enjoyed playing the accordion and singing in the choir.

Grant served an LDS mission in 1950 to his family’s homeland of Sweden. With so much rich heritage there, he learned and kept the Swedish language and those wonderful traditions ever instilled. Following his mission, he and a companion Rex Olson traveled Europe, seeing so much through London, then war-torn Germany, and finally Bologna and Rome, Italy.

Shortly after returning from Sweden, he was drafted to the Korean War and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He spoke of the different wars often, teaching us so much history. He was so keen, to the very end, to recall all names and dates.

After Korea, he continued his education by attending BYU, where he met his forever love, Evelyn Shaw, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 6,1956. They later settled in Idaho Falls, where Grant worked as a draftsman and then as a technical writer for the INL. He loved to do carpentry and build, always working on home additions and other projects. Grant and Evelyn celebrated 50 years of marriage, shortly before her death in 2007. With their 6 children, and now 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, he has always cherished his family.

So much learning and many blessings came to Grant while living good standards and serving in many various callings in the LDS Church. He was blessed in his life and travels, even returning to Sweden later in life with his daughter.

Grant is survived by his children, Angela (Mike) Roach, Kathy Johnson, Ken (Deanne) Johnson, Ron Johnson, and Janette (Jason) Halter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Shaw Johnson, and his son, Gary Johnson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Osgood Ward building, 7940 N. 35th W., in Idaho Falls. A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue in Idaho Falls, and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior at the church. Services will be broadcast live.

Burial will be at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and the Idaho Honor Guard.
