John Mackin passed away at his home surrounded by his family on May 22, 2025, in Idaho Falls at the age of 58 after a tumultuous 15-year battle with cancer. John was so much more than his cancer. He grew up in Enterprise, Oregon, where he developed his lifelong passion for hunting, the mountains, camping, and horses. After graduating from Montana State University, he worked at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho, for many years. It was there he met and later married his wife, Susie (Henry) Mackin. They lived a life of outdoor adventure together and had two amazing kids, Connor and Addie.

Connor and Addie were everything to John, and he fought his cancer as long as he could to spend more time with his family. As John was an incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, respectful hunter, he took great pride in sharing this passion, along with the joy of eating Spam over the campfire, with Connor on their numerous hunting adventures together! In Addie, he shared his love of competition and athleticism, whether it was tallying who caught the most fish between them, beating the opponent in pickleball, or even a family board game!

He instilled the value of hard work, family strength, and loving one another in his kids, and he felt very fortunate to live long enough to see them graduate from high school and enter college. John persevered during his cancer battles with an intense will to live, eternal optimism, and a positive attitude.

His passing will leave a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Mackin and Sally (Talbot) Wilson. He is survived his wife, Susie Mackin; son, Connor Mackin; daughter, Addie Mackin; sisters: Patty Barnett of Lewiston, Idaho, and Jill Moncrief of Enterprise, Oregon; nieces and nephews: Mitchell Barnett, Jim Barnett, Chelsi (Jake) Thompson, Justin (Darcy) Moncrief, and Shelby Moncrief.

Per John’s request, no funeral services will be held. Cremation is under the care of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
