LeNea Hansen

LeNea Winborg ‘Pete’ Hansen left this earth February 22, 2026, just two weeks shy of her 96th birthday. Mom, Pete, grandmother, friend was born March 6, 1930, in Idaho Falls to James Conrad ‘Con’ Winborg and Lucia Page. She was the second of six children. She grew up on 8th Street during the depression and World War II which gave her an intense sense of creative thriftiness. If you were ever in her house or cabin you saw how resourceful she was in repurposing almost anything.

Everyone in her family had nicknames with her father calling her ‘Pete’ and she carried that nickname throughout her life. She had a strong commitment to family and was a devoted sister helping raise and care for her siblings which was often challenging. If you want to hear some of those tales, just ask Larry or Anne about their days as kids (and adults).

On September 7, 1949, LeNea married Myron Dale Hansen in the Logan, Utah Temple and they started a life together. They attended Utah State University and after Myron’s graduation, moved to West Covina, California, where Myron worked for the State of California Transportation Department as a Civil Engineer. While there they added Debbie and Heidi to their family. But on December 15, 1962, tragedy struck and Myron passed away from a bleeding ulcer. LeNea’s family rallied around her little family and they moved to a little house at 438 N Park in Shelley, Idaho. There she continued to raise her daughters and a cow, (that often escaped).

On June 4, 1965, she married Hans Christian Hansen who was a widower and he and his four boys Harold, Dennis, Robert, and Barry joined them. They remodeled the house adding space for everyone and there they raised their family, a huge garden and many fruit trees.

Mom was always the forward thinker and with tenacity, ingenuity, and her thriftiness they built a cabin above Palisades reservoir. She found doors and plate glass windows from buildings being demolished, she had Cottonwood trees being removed from a school milled for the A-frame beams, scrounging antique/junk shops for fixtures etc., with the boys doing most of the labor, (the girls helped too).

Mom loved the summers at the cabin and as she got older and unable to spend as much time there, she started painting pictures of the views from the front porch. Mom loved to paint and some days would paint 2-3 small pictures, they have filled her house and you’ll find many paintings at her children and grandchildren’s homes.

Family was important to mom and she was proud of her ‘Winborg’ blood. She looked forward to family reunions and loved when everyone would get together and ‘gossip’, reminisce, eat and hug. She had many, many tea parties for her grandkids, great-grandkids, family and friends where we would sit at the kitchen table and enjoy each other’s company. Her love of a good tea party also led to a large collection of teapots. Mom also collected a variety of other things, collections often started with a gift or family heirloom. If you’ve been to her house, you’ve seen the figurines, crystal, artwork, furniture, and the list goes on.

Hans passed away from cancer in 1990 leaving mom a widow for a second time. Being alone didn’t slow Mom down, as a very strong person she kept extremely active. She was inquisitive, always asking questions and had a great memory for people, dates and events, she was the perfect clearinghouse, she kept her family and friends delightfully connected. Even as she grew older and unable to move about as easily, she still was able to live independently in her home and loved those that stopped and visited.

LeNea is preceded in death by her parents; Siblings; Connie Christensen, James Winborg, and Nancy Westover. She is survived by her siblings; Anna Lou Orme – Shelley, ID, Larry (Sydney) Winborg – Hyde Park, UT; children; Harold (Nancy) Hansen – Las Vegas, NV, Dennis Hansen – Layton, UT, Robert Hansen (Debbie) – Shelley, ID, Debora Skabelund – Logan, UT, Barry (Sue) Hansen – West Valley, UT, Heidi (Tab) Roper – Boise, ID, 15 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Nalder Funeral Home (110 W Oak, Shelley ID) at 1:30 pm February 27, followed by a 3pm graveside service at the Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery (785 E 1200 N, Shelley, ID) and dinner following at the Shelley First Ward building (184 N Park, Shelley, ID). The family invites those that knew LeNea to come and join us at any or all of the celebration events. Especially dinner where we can do as mom loved: hang out, eat, tell stories (there will be an open mic), and gossip.
