Mack Chappell

August 22nd, 2004 - March 2nd, 2024

Elder Mack Jared Chappell, 19, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 2, 2024. He was joyfully serving the Lord’s children in the New Jersey, Morristown Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His family, friends, mission leaders and fellow missionaries find comfort knowing that his mission continues beyond this life.

Mack was born on August 22, 2004 in Rexburg, Idaho to proud, first-time parents, Jared & Amy Chappell. He came into this world a small, but mighty son and has continued to lead mightily with love and example as the oldest of eight children. Mack is a loyal friend and the best brother, with the kindest heart. He cares deeply for the people in his life and has a special gift and ability to make an impact for good on everyone around him. Everyone loves Macky!

Mack grew up in loving homes in Rexburg, Idaho; Alpine, Utah; and Sugar City, Idaho. As a young child, Mack loved watching movies, playing with his brothers/cousins and swinging a bat (wiggle, wiggle, whack!) He spent the days of his youth outside fishing, riding horses, snowmobiling, bombing the hill at the cabin in Driggs, jet-setting to horse races, baseball games and family trips. He loved traveling with his dad.

Mack loves all things chocolate (especially Reese’s peanut butter cups), Spider-Man (his alter-ego), spending time with the people he loves and of course, baseball.

The Chappell boys play a lot of baseball! Mack’s American Heritage School team won the Utah State Championship in 2021. In Sugar City, he was awarded Player of the Game in the 2022 quarter finals when he delivered a 2 RBI game winning base hit for his team. Mack built strong relationships with his coaches, team-mates and his dad through the life lessons of baseball. One of the greatest gifts in Mack’s life was playing baseball alongside his brothers, Will and Sam. Last season Mack and Will hit back to back HRs in the same inning which was one of his fondest memories of his baseball career. His mom and younger siblings were always there (even in the freezing Idaho weather!) always his biggest cheerleaders. Mack has a special, soft place in his heart for his mom and he absolutely adores his younger brothers and sisters.

Besides baseball, Mack’s high school years were filled with small town Friday night lights, date dances, fishing at the pond, Idaho summers, backyard bonfires and lots of fireworks with his forever friends. Mack graduated from Sugar Salem High School and LDS Seminary in May, 2023.

Mack truly found himself through service to others. Highlights of his life include humanitarian mission trips to Hawaii and Tahiti, where he served the people and learned to love their cultures. The genuine love and friendships forged on these trips were life changing for Mack and his eyes lit up when he talked about them.

Growing up, Mack’s ultimate goal was to serve a mission, so excited to teach others about Jesus. He was called to serve a two-year volunteer mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 8, 2023 and began his missionary training on July 10, 2023. Mack loves being a missionary! He found light and purpose through serving his companions, ward members and the many new friends he met during his time in the Morristown, New Jersey area. Mack loves his Savior, Jesus Christ and committed his life to “Go tell the world about Him.”

Mack leaves behind his beloved family: parents, Jared and Amy Chappell; siblings, Will, Sam, Clark, Jane, Olivia, Grace and Beau; grandparents, Michael Chappell (Kati) and Carolyn Chappell, Greg and Joan VanSteenkiste; great-grandparents, Sheldon and Irene Chappell and Marjorie VanSteenkiste; Uncle Daniel Chappell (Shawni), cousins Stella, Owen, Henry, Fern, Peter, Betty; Uncle Andrew Chappell (Whitney), cousins Ruby, Birdie; Aunt Sarah Hiatt (Brady), cousins Milly, Emmy, Parley; Uncle Mike VanSteenkiste (Sarah), cousins Payton, Sydney, Avery, Tess, Clare; Uncle Danny VanSteenkiste (Jeannie), cousins Sawyer, Finn, Tucker; Uncle Matt VanSteenkiste (Whitney), cousins Mohen, Van; and many other family members and friends who are family.
