Michael D. Hargis, 63, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Mike was born on February 9, 1963, in Ogden, Utah, to Darrell Thomas Hargis and Marilyn Barker Hargis. He grew up and attended schools in Bountiful, Utah, and graduated from Viewmont High School. He achieved his Eagle Scout award at age 15. After high school, he served a 2-year mission in the Canada Calgary mission.

On June 1, 1985, he married the love of his life, Deanna Lee, in the Idaho Falls temple. Mike and Deanna made their home in Idaho Falls where they raised their 4 children. He attended Eastern Idaho Technical College and earned a degree in Radiation Safety. Over the course of 35 years, Mike worked in Radiation Safety and Emergency Management at the INL.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in various Church callings, including serving in the bishopric. His favorite calling of all was that of Scoutmaster.

He found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and cherished every opportunity to make memories with them. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, tying flies, camping, four-wheeling, gardening, golfing, photography, and shooting. He also took pride in his Dutch oven cooking and enjoyed sharing good food and good times with family and friends. His love of family history led him to genealogy and indexing, where he found fulfillment in discovering and preserving the stories of those who came before him.

Mike is survived by his wife, Deanna Hargis of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Mark Hargis of Idaho Falls, ID, son, Tyler (Emily) Hargis of Shelley, ID, son, Nathan (Mattie) Hargis of Rigby, ID; daughter, Camille (Zach) Nelson of Idaho Falls, ID; parents, Darrell and Marilyn Hargis of Bountiful, UT; brother, Scott (Wendy) Hargis of Hyrum, UT; and sister, Angi (Dave) Dandurand of Anchorage, AK. He is also survived by his 10 amazing grandchildren; Louis, Porter, Piper, Palmer, Parker, Hatcher, Zoe, Amelia, Adaline, and Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and LaVon Barker; Lewis and Blanche Hargis; and his father and mother-in-law, Mark and Ardeth Lee.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1291 West 65th South in Idaho Falls. A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Avenue, and Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
