Richard Floyd Hawkes
April 4th, 1939 - April 18th, 2026
Richard Floyd Hawkes, born April 4, 1939, in Thomas, Idaho, was the cherished son of Harold and Ethel Hawkes. He was the thirteenth child in a large and blended family that included three brothers, three sisters, three half‑brothers, and seven half‑sisters. Richard spent his early years in Thomas and the Little Lost River Valley before graduating from Butte High School in Arco, Idaho, in 1955.
In 1961, Richard married Georgia Hepworth, who preceded him in death. Together they welcomed two children: Jeffrey Hawkes of Washington and Gerralynne Walker of Blackfoot, Idaho, who also preceded him in death. Richard was blessed with six grandchildren and fifteen great‑grandchildren. One great‑grandson, Aiden Beasley, also preceded him in death.
A lifelong resident of Blackfoot, Idaho, Richard is survived by his wife, Helen S. Hawkes, whom he married in December 2005; his sisters Connie Anderson and Patricia Hawkes; and his sister‑in‑law Bernice Williams.
Family was the heart of Richard’s life. Known affectionately as Grandpa Dick, he held a deep, individual love for each of his grandchildren and great‑grandchildren—a love he expressed openly and often.
Richard built his career in the metals trade and was a committed leader within his local trade union. Beyond his work, he found joy in the outdoors: camping, fishing, fly tying, woodworking, carpentry, and tending his garden. At family reunions, Uncle and Grandpa Dick was the source of laughter—famous for his stories, jokes, playful humor, and his unforgettable “barley pop” pancakes served each morning.
He is loved as a brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in the enduring belief in eternal families and the lasting bonds that continue beyond this life.
