(NEW YORK) — A hashtag urging Justin Bieber fans to cut themselves went viral on Twitter on Monday but it turns out it was just a prank.
The hashtag, “cutforbieber” was started in response to published photos of the “Boyfriend” singer smoking what appeared to be marijuana.
Some Twitter users posted photos of their supposed self-mutilation along with the hashtag while others called the trend “stupid,” “disgusting” and “disrespectful.”
But many of the tweets of self-mutilation photos appeared to be fake. One fake account tweeted, “I cut because you use drugs. This world is meaningless.”
A representative for Bieber declined to comment.
The hashtag was reportedly started as a prank by members of a 4Chan message board, which is known for being offensive.
Miley Cyrus fought back against the hashtag, tweeting, “If people are really saying they are gonna cut themselves cuz Justin Bieber could’ve smoked some weed the world really is coming to an end!”
Bieber has been the target of Twitter pranks before. Last fall a “baldforbieber” hashtag went viral after a false report that the Biebs was diagnosed with cancer. The rumor was reportedly also started by 4chan.
