Palace Malice was trained by Todd Pletcher. Pletcher won the Belmont for the second time, and had a record five horses in the race.

Palace Malice, who had 13-1 odds at race time, finished 12th at the Derby and skipped the Preakness. He was ridden by jockey Mike Smith, who finished in second at every Triple Crown race last season.

“It’s incredible,” Smith said to the Horse Racing Network. “God’s got a way of making you be patient. Today was our day. Todd (Pletcher) wrote the perfect play. It ran exactly like he wrote it. I rode it that way myself and it just worked out.”

Palace Malice returned $29.60 on a $2 bet to win.
