Fremont County Sheriff’s Office receives grant for body cameras

ST. ANTHONY — All on-duty Fremont County Sheriff deputies will soon be wearing body cameras thanks to grant funding announced this week.

Sheriff Len Humphries tells EastIdahoNews.com his office has received an $8,000 grant to purchase ten body cameras. The department already has a few body cameras in use, but the grant will now allow every working deputy to wear one.

“If they anticipate any kind of an issue, they can just hit a switch and it will record audio and video,” Humphries says. “We already have cameras in all of the patrol vehicles and this is now an extra tool that allows us to protect the public.”

Humphries says his office applied for the Richard Vassick Endowment in December. He learned Monday that the application had been accepted and approved.

“We’ve been evaluating a few cameras and they’ve been working out pretty well for us,” Humphries says. “This will really help us.”

The body cameras will not continually record. Rather, it’s up to the individual deputy to turn them on. Once video is shot, Humphries says the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office will keep the footage for 256 days based on the recommendation of Fremont County Prosecutor Karl Lewies.
