Sixth Annual ‘Treasures Tour’ being held today

  Published at

IDAHO FALLS — The Bonneville County Heritage Association will host its sixth annual Treasures Tour today. This year’s event will highlight experiences, innovations and landmarks significant to the Idaho Falls Greenbelt area, according to organizers.

This year’s tour, titled “Greenbelt in the Past,” begins at 10 a.m. in the Idaho Falls Library Conference Room with an introduction by BCHA board member David Nipper, who will also distribute a map to attendees.

The tour will then proceed to the lower deck of Sportsman Park, where BCHA board members will make the following presentations:

11:30 a.m. — Former Idaho legislator Linden Bateman will present “Native American Life and Early Pioneer Settlements in Idaho.”

12:30 p.m. — Joe Stewart will present “Early Transportation and Water.”

1 p.m. — Davidjohn Stosich will present “Circus Stories.”

1:30 p.m. — Susan Mardis will present “Canal History.”

Following the presentations, attendees are invited to walk the Greenbelt and, using the map as a guide, identify areas corresponding with each presentation.

The first Treasures Tour was held in 2011 as part of Bonneville County’s centennial celebration. As part of a centennial survey, locals identified area “treasures” worthy of recognition. “Each year we take a portion of those survey results and develop a Treasures Tour so that people can learn about how Bonneville County used to be and how it is today,” BCHA chair Ann Rydalch said.

BCHA’s objective is to preserve not only the county’s history but also to celebrate the memories, traditions, and culture that have made southeast Idaho what it is today. The Treasures Tour is organized in alignment with that goal and as an opportunity for citizens to learn about the county. “By learning about our past, it helps us prepare for our future,” Rydalch said.
