Matt Wieters to Have Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery

Matt Wieters to Have Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery

Robbie Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) — Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, the team confirmed on Monday.

Wieters had a .308 batting average, five homers and 18 RBIs in 26 games.

“We were hoping to get real lucky today, but I think we all knew where it was headed,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said on Monday. “It really wasn’t making a whole lot of progress.”

Wieters has not played since May 10 and will have the injured ligament replaced by a tendon from the right wrist.

Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundley are the two other catchers Baltimore has on their roster.

“I feel real confident with the two guys that we have here, and the depth we have below,” Showalter said.

Johan Santana Tears Achilles in Comeback Bid

Johan Santana Tears Achilles in Comeback Bid

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(BALTIMORE, Md.) — Johan Santana has gone from of the games more dominant pitchers, to one of baseball’s more tragic stories. After being struck by a line drive and stumbling to field the ball in extended spring training, it was revealed that Santana suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

The injury is the latest in a string of devastating blows over the past couple seasons. A two-time Cy Young winner, Santana signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles in March after undergoing his second shoulder surgery in as many years.

“The skills are there. He’s been able to rehab his arm, but now he’s got another challenge,” said Orioles vice president of baseball operations. “He was pitching well. The last time out he had his velocity and he was able to back-door his slider.  After (Friday), he was going to come up and join the major league team, and we were going to continue the rehab in (Double-A) Bowie.”

The 35-year-old had his contract purchased from Triple-A Norfolk and was placed on the major league disabled list on Monday. Santana has not pitched in the Majors since 2012 while with the New York Mets.

Orioles Bringing Along Johan Santana Slowly

Orioles Bringing Along Johan Santana Slowly

Eliot J. Schechter/MLB Photos(NEW YORK) — The Baltimore Orioles could use a boost in the starting pitching department, which is why they’re carefully bringing along former All-Star starting pitcher Johan Santana so he can help them during the stretch run.

Santana has been pitching in the minor leagues to get healthy and fine tune his game so he can get back to the Major Leagues. The team plans on having Santana join the team sometime in mid-June.

The team is hoping to start Santana at Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk in early-June. If all goes well, the team will call him up to the Majors.

“Ideally, the last outing would be six innings if the other club would cooperate,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “If these three options work out, he’d be an option for us. It’s one thing being able to get through it, it’s another thing to evaluate whether it will work up here.”

The 35-year-old Santana is working his way back from shoulder surgery. He has also dealt with various injuries since 2010.

Overall, he’s gone 139-78 with a 3.20 ERA during his 12-year career.

Chris Davis Hits Three Home Runs as Orioles Trounce Pirates

Chris Davis Hits Three Home Runs as Orioles Trounce Pirates

Robbie Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) –  Chris Davis hit three home runs and had five RBIs as the Baltimore Orioles clobbered the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 on Tuesday night.

It was the second career three-homer game for Davis, who doubled his season total in one night. He also went deep three times on Aug. 24, 2012 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

“I felt like I just had some good pitches to hit and I rolled over everything, so I got here early today and worked on some stuff in early (batting practice),” said Davis. “It just sometimes clicks for you and today was one of those days.”

The MLB’s home run king in 2013 hit a two-run blast in the fifth inning off Francisco Liriano (0-4) that gave the Orioles a 6-1 lead. He added a solo shot in the seventh inning and a two-run shot in the ninth to break the game open.  He led the majors with 53 home runs last season.

Nelson Cruz also homered for the Orioles, while Adam Jones had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.  Miguel Gonzalez pitched six innings to earn his second victory of the season.

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) — Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy (2-3) had a perfect game through 6 2-3 innings as Kansas City (21-21) shutdown the Baltimore Orioles (22-19), 1-0 on Saturday night.

Duffy retired the first 20 batters he faced before Orioles outfielder Adam Jones took a 1-0 pitch and single to centerfield. The left-hander finished the game, allowing two hits through seven scoreless innings.

Orioles starter Bud Norris (2-4) allowed the game’s only run, when Royals designated hitter Billy Butler singled home outfielder Nori Aoki in the first inning.

Royals reliever Greg Holland picked up his 11th save of the year when he got Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz to strike out with the bases loaded.
