Reds Joey Votto Dealing with a Quad Strain

Reds Joey Votto Dealing with a Quad Strain

Rich Pilling/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is off to a rough start this season, but he avoided an injury scare as it was revealed he is dealing with a quad strain, not a knee injury.

It was feared that Votto had a more serious injury, but an MRI revealed it was a distal quadriceps strain. It must have been a relief for Votto, because he had knee surgery back in 2012 on the same leg.

The MRI also revealed no structural damage. Votto missed 48 games in 2012 with a torn meniscus.

A career .312 hitter, the 30-year-old Votto is having one of the worst starts of his career. In 39 games this season, Votto is hitting .257 with six home runs while only driving in 12 runs.

Not only has Votto struggled, but so have the Reds. At 19-21, the Reds find themselves in 3rd place in the NL Central.

Along with an ailing Votto, the team has also dealt with injuries to Mat Latos, Jay Bruce, Aroldis Chapman, and Devin Meseraco.

Reds Shut Down the Padres Behind Cueto’s Complete Game

Reds Shut Down the Padres Behind Cueto’s Complete Game

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(CINNCINATI) -- Johnny Cueto threw a complete game three-hitter to lead the Cincinnati Reds past the San Diego Padres 5-0 Thursday in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader.

Cueto walked two and struck out eight to improve his league-leading ERA to 1.25.

"He was terrific," Reds skipper Bryan Price said. "He's had games where he's been sharper, but he kept making pitches. I don't know what else I can say about him."

Brandon Phillips provided the offense for the Reds (18-20), hitting a three-run home run off Padres starter Ian Kennedy in the bottom of the fifth.

Seth Smith extended his hitting streak to 10 games for the Padres (19-22).
