Rice Wins First Conference Title in 56-Years

Rice Wins First Conference Title in 56-Years

iStockPhot​o/Thinksto​ck(HOUSTON, Texas) — The Rice Owls won their first outright conference championship since 1957 on Saturday by defeating Marshall 41-24 to win the Conference-USA title.

The Owls (10-1) pounded the Thundering Herd (9-4) on the ground, rushing for 250 yards on the day. Charles Ross ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns, tying the school’s single season record of 14. Running Back Luke Turner passed for two more scores as Rice jumped out to an early 14-0 lead.

The Herd tried to make a comeback and trailed by 11 at half. However, the Owls scored 14 unanswered points to put the game away.

Marshall had their five game win streak snapped in what was their first C-USA Championship Game appearance. Quarterback Rakeem Cato threw for 265 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
