No. 11 Kansas State Blanks Texas

No. 11 Kansas State Blanks Texas

Ed Zurga/Getty Images(MANHATTAN, KS) -- The Kansas State Wildcats rolled over the Texas Longhorns with a 23-0 victory Saturday.

The Wildcats remain undefeated in Big 12 play and pushed thier overall record to 6-1.

Quarterback Jake Waters threw for 224 yards and trusty receiver Tyler Lockett caught eight passes for 103 yards. Kansas State scored both of their touchdowns on the ground on the legs of DeMarcus Robinson and Charles Jones.

The Longhorns continue to adjust under the new regime of head coach Charlie Strong.  With a now 3-5 record, inconsistency continues to be the bane of Texas football. Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes was 13-25 for only 106 yards.

This was the first time Texas had suffered a shut out since 2004 when they lost to Oaklahoma 12-0.

No. 16 Nebraska Stomps Rutgers

No. 16 Nebraska Stomps Rutgers

Football Texture/iStockphoto(LINCOLN, NE) -- With a masterful effort from running back Ameer Abdullah the Nebraska Cornhuskers ran right through the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 42-24.

Abdullah broke a school record with 341 all-purpose yards, surpassing Roy Helu's previous record of 321 yards from scrimmage. The diminutive running back scampered for 225 yards and three touchdowns.

Nebraska is now 7-1 with an upcoming matchup against Purdue.

Rutgers continues to receive a rude awakening to the realities of playing in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights are now 1-3 in conference play and coming off a 56-17 drubbing from Ohio State the previous week.

Quarterback Gary Nova remained unimpressive completing 8 of 19 passes, throwing one touchdown and one interception before suffering an injury to his knee at the end of the first half.

Marcus Mariota Leads Ducks Past California, 59-41

Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images(SANTA CLARA, Calif.) -- Heisman Trophy candidate Marcus Mariota threw five touchdown passes in Oregon's 59-41 win over California at Levi's Stadium on Friday night.

Mariota threw his first interception of the year and passed for 326 yards in the victory.

"During the game I was upset," Mariota said. "Coach came and joked with me and got me to relax a little bit and forget about it. It's OK. It happens. I just have to learn from it."

The Ducks (7-1) improved to 4-1 in the Pac-12 and California (4-4) dropped to 2-4.

"You might want to go buy a lottery ticket, Marcus made a couple of mistakes," Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich said. "I'm actually glad, I think, that that happened to get him off the schneid."

Oregon running back Royce Freeman had 112 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Saban: Rivarly with Vols Is ‘Special’

Saban: Rivarly with Vols Is ‘Special’

Istockphoto(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) -- Fourth ranked Alabama (6-1) is expecting everything they can handle against Tennessee (3-4) on Saturday.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban called the game this week "one of the great rivalry games in college football. [It] certainly has a lot of tradition and something that's been very special and means a lot to a lot of our fans."

The Vols are still searching for their first win in the SEC after losing three straight in their conference matchups.

Tennessee's defense has allowed 21.3 points per game this season and Alabama's offense is averaging 36.9.

"They're big, they're physical up front, a very typical Alabama offensive line," Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. "I think they're playing to the strengths of their players. They did a lot of quick screens, a lot of dual packages where you have the run and the pass option off of it. I think they're doing a great job."

The game also will be the return of Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, who left Tennessee after a 7-6 season in 2009, which caused rioting on campus.

"The game is not about that," Saban said. "The game is about the players and regardless of what fans think or what fans do, I think our coaches and our players need to focus on what we're going to do in the game and how we're going to help our players play our best."

Michigan State Coach Is Looking Forward to Rivalry with Michigan Saturday

Michigan State Coach Is Looking Forward to Rivalry with Michigan Saturday

David Dermer/ Diamond Images/ Getty Images(EAST LANSING, Mich.) -- Eighth-ranked Michigan State will look to add a sixth victory in the in-state rivalry between Michigan under head coach Mark Dantonio on Saturday.

Since coming over to East Lansing, Dantonio has won five out of six games against the Wolverines, who are 3-4 this season. Still, Dantonio is excited about the rivalry.

"It gets in your blood a little bit, it's just the way it is," Dantonio said on Tuesday.  "It just divides the state so it makes it unique in that respect, and you embrace it, you get involved in it, and it's in you."

Dantonio says despite Michigan's poor record this year, the team still gets pumped up for any rivalry.

"I think they're basically competitors," Dantonio said. "You're going to get yourself ready to play every football game.  Sometimes the more important the game is, the more the competiveness comes out in you and I think that's the nature of this situation."

The Spartan are 3-0 in the Big Ten this season and Michigan is 1-2. Still, Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner said they're just focused on the game ahead and not the season.

"We're not thinking about ruining their season," he added. "This is about us. I want to win this game as bad as I've wanted to win any game."

"Playing on a Friday night, there's not that much college games on, people will be tuning in," Mariota added. "It'll be a lot of fun."

Mariota has thrown 19 touchdowns and passed for 1,957 yards this season.

The Golden Bears are 2-3 in the Pac-12 so far this season.

Archie Manning Leaves Playoff Committee

Archie Manning Leaves Playoff Committee

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Citing health reasons, Archie Manning has stepped down Monday from the College Football Playoff Committee that was designed to select the four teams in the 2014 NCAA Playoff, the first in collegiate football.

"It is an honor to serve on this committee, and I enjoy the group and was looking forward to the opportunity ahead," Manning said. "My health had to be my primary concern and I intend to be up and about as soon as possible."

The 65-year-old underwent knee replacement surgery earlier this year and has begun to experience some discomfort while walking. Manning is scheduled to have another procedure done in the next month and will be unable to attend the committee's meetings.

Now a 12-member group, the committee will release its first rankings on Oct. 28. Should a 6-6 deadlock vote occur for the top two teams in the playoff, the group will continue to discuss and re-vote until a member changes their mind. There is currently no option where the committee's chair can break a tie.

With the departure of Manning, the committee has placed Mike Tranghese to work with the Mountain West Conference while Steve Weiberg will assist with the Atlantic Coast Conference.

SEC West Dominates New AP Poll

SEC West Dominates New AP Poll

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- In the latest Associated Press college football poll, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) reached a new level of dominance. Four of the top five teams in the country all reside in the SEC, the first time a single conference can boast such a feat.

Mississippi State (6-0) remained the number one team in the land while Ole Miss (7-0) remains third. Alabama (6-1) jumped up to fourth in the poll, thanks to a 59-0 rout over then 21st-ranked Texas A&M, with Auburn (5-1) rounding out the top-five.

The lone team not from the SEC in the top-five is Florida State (7-0) of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Seminoles held off Notre Dame on Saturday, which dropped to seventh with the loss.

The Oregon Ducks (6-1) sit at sixth in the nation while the Irish (6-1) dropped two spots to seventh. Michigan State (6-1), Georgia (6-1), and TCU (6-1) finish out the top-10 teams.

Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Stanford all fell from the AP Top-25 Poll after week seven.

Kessler Throws School-Record 7 TDs as (22) USC Clobbers Colorado

Kessler Throws School-Record 7 TDs as (22) USC Clobbers Colorado

BananaStock/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Cody Kessler threw for a school-record seven touchdowns to lead No. 22 USC past Colorado 56-28 Saturday.

Kessler was on fire throwing all seven of his touchdowns in the first three quarters to break the record previously set by Matt Barkley in 2011.

"It's an honor for me to break his record," Kessler said."But I'm thankful he (Barkley) set the bar so high and taught me as much as he did."

Kessler threw three of those touchdowns to receiver Nelson Agholor, who had six catches for 128 yards in the win.

The game was never in doubt for USC (5-2, 4-1 Pac-12), which led 28-0 after the first quarter.

The one bright spot for Colorado (2-5, 0-4) was receiver Nelson Spruce. He caught his 11th touchdown of the season, tying the school's record.

Javorius Allen ran for 128 yards and a touchdown and has now ran for over 100 yards in five of USC's first six games. He becomes the first Trojan's player to do that since Reggie Bush in 2005.

(2) Florida State Survives (5) Notre Dame

(2) Florida State Survives (5) Notre Dame

Grant Halverson/Getty Images(TALLAHASSEE, Fla.) -- Notre Dame's Everett Golson's potential game-winning touchdown was intercepted in the end zone as Florida State held on for a 31-27 win in a battle of top-five teams. For the second-ranked Seminoles (7-0), it was their 23rd straight win while the fifth-rated Irish are knocked from the ranks of the unbeatens.

Notre Dame (6-1) jumped on the board early, scoring when Golson found Corey Robinson for a touchdown in the first quarter. The Seminoles responded with a touchdown pass from Jameis Winston at the end of the quarter, starting an exciting contest on the right foot.

Both squads traded scores in the second, with the Irish taking a 17-10 lead into halftime. However, Winston came out of the locker room and immediately led Florida State down the field for the tying score when he found Rashad Greene for a 10-yard strike. After Notre Dame regained the lead on another pass from Golson, Karlos Williams answered with a game-tying touchdown run, making it a 24-24 game after three quarters.

Kyle Brindza would put Notre Dame back on top with his second field goal of the night, but the Irish defense could not hold a potent Seminoles offense. It would be Williams once again, scoring from 1-yard out, that gave Florida State their first lead of the night at 31-30 with under eight minutes to play.

After an Irish drive got stymied, the defense helped Notre Dame get one more chance at an upset. That seemed to have happened when Golson found Robinson for a third touchdown catch with less than 20 seconds remaining. However, an offensive pass interference penalty took the points off the board and forced the Irish in a 4th and goal situation.

With time winding down, Golson scrambled to keep the play alive, but his pass to the end zone was picked off by Jacob Pugh. The Seminoles took a knee on the next play and celebrated their victory.

(14) Kansas State Holds Off (11) Oklahoma

(14) Kansas State Holds Off (11) Oklahoma

Ed Zurga/Getty Images(NORMAN, Okla.) -- A blocked extra point and a pair of missed field goals helped the 14th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats knock off number 11 Oklahoma, 31-30, on Saturday. Sooners kicker Michael Hunnicutt missed a field goal that would have given Oklahoma the lead with less than four minutes to play.

"I feel for Michael," Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said. "He's been an excellent kicker for us and a great young man. We all love him. I feel that for him, because unfortunately, the kicker, that just kind of sticks out."

"The youngster that missed the field goal, he will go another hundred years without missing another field goal," said Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder. "So we were just lucky. That happens."

The contest went back-and-forth throughout, with the Wildcats (5-1) taking a 21-17 lead into halftime. Hunnicutt's first missed field goal, a 32-yard try that went wide left, came at the end of the first half. Kansas State come out of the locker room and added to their lead, a 27-yard field goal to make it 24-17.

Both squads traded touchdowns in the third quarter, giving Kansas State a 31-24 lead heading into the final period. Oklahoma (5-2) was able to drive the ball and score Trevor Knight touchdown pass to Durron Neal. However, Hunnicutt's extra point was blocked by Travis Britz.

The Sooners eventually got the ball back and reached the Kansas State 1-yard line. After not being able to put the ball in the end zone for the win, Hunnicutt's 19-yard chip shot missed and the Wildcats were able to run out the clock.

Football Texture/iStockphoto(TUSCALOOSA, Ala.) -- The Alabama Crimson Tide scored 35 points in the second quarter on their way to a rout over 21st-ranked Texas A&M on Saturday, 59-0. The seventh-ranked team in the country put up 602 total yards while keeping the Aggies from even attempting a field goal.

"I think this is as close as we can get to the Alabama football that we want to try to get from our players in terms of effort, toughness, emotional excitement and execution that we got throughout the game," said head coach Nick Saban.

Alabama (6-1) scored on ever possession in the first half, opening up the scoring on an Adam Griffith field goal in the first quarter. The first touchdown came a few minutes later when T.J. Yeldon scampered in from nine yards out. Yeldon finished the game with two running touchdowns and 114 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Blake Sims through for 268 yards, three touchdowns and ran for another score. Reserve Jake Coker also threw a touchdown pass late for the Crimson Tide. Both Amari Cooper and Derrick Henry had a pair of receiving touchdowns in the blowout.

While the offense dismantled Texas A&M (5-3), the defense was as impressive. The Aggies only managed 172 total yards en route to their third straight loss.

Hugh Freeze: Team Needs to ‘Stay in the Moment’

University of Mississippi/Getty Images(OXFORD, MS.) -- Third ranked Ole Miss (6-0) will host the Tennessee Volunteers (3-3) in an SEC matchup on Saturday.

Ole Miss comes into the game 3-0 in their conference and head coach Hugh Freeze doesn't want his team looking past the Volunteers.

Freeze said he wants the team to "stay in the moment [and] prepare for this game Saturday. It's the only one we should be worried or concerned about.  The other ones are in the trash; this is the only one that matters."

Mississippi is averaging 35.7 points per game, but the Tennessee defense is only giving up 19.2 this season.

"They're very active up front," Freeze said. "They're downhill players are very aggressive, they're going to commit people to stopping the run, [which is] very difficult to run the football on."

Tennessee is 0-2 on the road this year and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin is looking forward to the task of handing Ole Miss their first loss.

"[Facing Ole Miss] is definitely a big opportunity," Reeves-Maybin said. "Everyone's been talking about their defense, but we're going to let everybody know that Tennessee's defense is here and we're going to make a statement."

(5) Baylor Scores 24 Straight in Fourth to Rally Past (9) TCU, 61-58

iStockphoto(WACO, Texas) -- Fifth-ranked Baylor scored 24-straight points, erasing a 21 point deficit with 11:38 left to play, to beat ninth-ranked TCU, 61-58 Saturday.

After Baylor tied the game on Bryce Petty's 25-yard touchdown pass to Corey Coleman, TCU had a chance to win. The Horned Frogs (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) drove it to the Bears 45 but turned it over on downs after failing to convert a fourth-and-three. Baylor then marched down the field before Chris Callahan delivered the game-winning 28-yard field goal with time expiring.

"I just knew, looking at guys' faces, that we were going to come back in that game," Petty said. "With our offense and the way that we play defense, 21 points isn't a big deal for us."

Petty finishes the game completing 28 of 55 passes for a career-high 510 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Baylor (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) has now won 13-straight home games.
