Packers Stay Strong at Home Against Falcons

Tom Lynn /Getty Images(GREEN BAY, Wi.) -- The Green Bay Packers maintained home dominance with a 43-37 victory over the Atlanta Falcons Monday night.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers continued his MVP-like season, completing 24 of 36 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns.

The Packers also leaned on their running game to keep the Falcons off balance.  Eddie Lacy and James Starks each ran for a touchdown and combined for 148 yards on 23 carries.

The Falcons fell behind early, surrendering a 24 point lead at halftime. Julio Jones helped lead an Atlanta rally, catching a career best 259 yards on 11 catches, including a 22-yard touchdown that contributed to a 20 point Falcons fourth quarter.

Green Bay (10-3) has won all seven of their home games so far this season, scoring at least 38 points in four of their last five games in Lambeau. Their final home game will be in week 17 against the Detroit Lions, who are one game behind the Packers in the NFC North at 9-4.

Monday Night Football Preview

Monday Night Football Preview

Tom Lynn /Getty Images(GREEN BAY, Wisc.) -- The Green Bay Packers will host the Atlanta Falcons on Monday in a battle of two first place teams.

Green Bay is coming off an impressive 26-21 win over the Patriots last Sunday and quarterback Aaron Rodgers knows how critical winning in the final stretch of the season is.

"We have some big goals, and we're getting into December football now with a chance with everything right in front of us," Rodgers said.

Rodgers has completed 66.3 percent of his passes and has thrown 32 touchdowns this year..

"No disrespect to any quarterback in the NFL, but right now he's at a level that much higher than anybody else," Falcons head coach Mike Smith said this week.  "I don't know that there's been a quarterback that's had a stretch like he's had in the history of the NFL."

The Falcons have won their last three out of four games, but are 2-4 on the road this year.

Rodgers Outduels Brady in Win Over Patriots

Rodgers Outduels Brady in Win Over Patriots

Tom Lynn /Getty Images(GREEN BAY, Wisc.) -- The Green Bay Packers went up 13-0 in the first quarter and held on late as Aaron Rodgers outdueled Tom Brady, beating the New England Patriots 26-21 on Sunday afternoon. The matchup was the first ever meeting between two of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

The Packers (9-3) got a pair of Mason Crosby field goals to open the scoring, before Rodgers found Richard Rodgers for a 32-yard touchdown pass and a 13-0 advantage. New England (9-3) got on the board quickly in the second with a 6-yard run from Brandon Bolden, making it a 13-7 game. After a third Crosby field goal the two teams traded touchdown passes, giving Green Bay a 23-14 lead at halftime.

A scoreless third quarter set up a dramatic final frame with the Patriots closing the gap almost immediately. Just over a minute into the period, Brady connected with Brandon LaFell on a 15-yard scoring play that brough New England within two at 23-21. Crosby would add another field goal, his fourth of the game, to make it a five point lead with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation.

New England looked to drive down the field and had a 3rd-and-nine at the Packers 20-yard line. Brady, who had not been sacked all game, was brought down for a 9-yard loss. That was followed by a missed field goal from Stephen Gostkowski, giving the ball back to Green Bay. With no timeouts, the Patriots could not stop the clock as the Packers improved to 6-0 at home.

Both quarterbacks performed well with each tossing a pair of touchdowns and neither throwing an interception. However, Rodgers was 24-for-38 for 368 yards while Brady was just 22-for-35 for only 245 yards.

Rodgers Ties NFL Record in Packers Rout

Rodgers Ties NFL Record in Packers Rout

Tom Lynn /Getty Images(GREEN BAY Wisc.) -- Aaron Rodgers tied an NFL record by throwing six touchdowns in the first half as Green Bay walloped the Chicago Bears 55-14 on Sunday night at Lambeau Field. The Packers (6-3) jumped out to a 45-0 lead before Chicago (3-6) finally got on the board in the third quarter.

"We just kind of got things going our way," Rodgers said. "The line did a good job of giving me time to extend plays. If you extend plays, you look down the field and there's Jordy Nelson. He made some nice catches."

Nelson had six catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Rodgers' six touchdown passes tied the Green Bay record for most scoring tosses in a game, while also tying Daryle Lamonica's NFL record for most touchdown passes in a half, which he set in 1969 while playing for Oakland.

All six of the Packers' scores in the first half came from a Rodgers pass. It began with a 1-yard strike to Brandon Bostick in the first and included scoring plays of 73, 56, and 40-yards. Chicago finally found the end zone when Jay Cutler hit Brandon Marshall for a 45-yard touchdown in the first half.

Rodgers finished the day with 325 passing yards in the win while Cutler tossed one touchdown for 272 yards to go along with two interceptions. Cutler's second interception was returned 82 yards by Casey Hayward for a touchdown.

Mike McCarthy & Green Bay Packers Agree to Contract Extension

Mike McCarthy & Green Bay Packers Agree to Contract Extension

iStock/Thinkstock(GREEN BAY, Wis.) -- The Green Bay Packers and head coach Mike McCarthy have agreed to a contract extension, the team announced on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In nine seasons at the helm of the Packers, McCarthy has compiled an overall record of 93-53, winning four division titles, an NFC championship and a Super Bowl title in the 2010 season.

His 93 wins rank third in franchise history behind Curly Lambeau, with 212, and Vince Lombardi, with 98.

“We are very happy to extend our relationship with Mike,” Packers general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. “Over the past nine years, he’s provided great stability and consistency to the Packers organization and our community as an excellent coach and leader. He’s a good man and we look forward to the future with Mike as our head coach.”

Before joining the Packers in 2006, McCarthy served as an offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2000-04) and San Francisco 49ers (2005).

Saints March Past Packers at Home

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(NEW ORLEANS) -- Drew Brees threw for three touchdowns while Mark Ingram ran for 172 yards and another score, helping the New Orleans Saints rout Green Bay 44-23 on Sunday night. The loss snapped the Packers (5-3) four-game winning streak while pulling the Saints (3-4) into a tie atop the NFC South.

"All we talked about all week long is just coming together as a team and playing a complete game as a team," said Brees. "It was a perfect representation of that."

Green Bay jumped on top early when Aaron Rodgers hit Randall Cobb on a 70-yard touchdown strike just two minutes into the first quarter. The Saints quickly countered with touchdown of their own, courtesy of Brandin Cooks' four-yard run. Both teams each converted three field goals in the first half, heading into halftime tied at 16-16.

The second half featured a little more defense, both teams scored on every possession in the first, but only from the Saints. After New Orleans turned the ball over on downs, the defense picked off Rodgers inside the redzone. Four plays later, Brees connected with Cooks on a 50-yard touchdown pass to put the Saints up 23-16.

Brees would also find Jimmy Graham and Josh Hill in the end zone, giving New Orleans a 37-16 lead before the Packers finally scored in the fourth quarter. The Saints quarterback finished the game with 311 yards on 27-of-32 passing.

Austin Davis Says He’s Humbled by Brett Favre’s Comments

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) -- St. Louis Rams quarterback Austin Davis received some high praise from future Hall of Famer Brett Favre this week.

Favre spoke with ESPN's Ed Werder and compared the Southern Miss alumni to another future Hall of Famer.

"Austin can definitely play at this level," Favre told Werder this week. "Not to sound off my rocker, but [Davis], in my mind, can be the next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner. [Brian] Hoyer as well. Austin, like those mentioned, just needed a legit opportunity."

Davis was humbled by the comments and said that Favre has sent him text messages of encouragement. Still, he told reporters that he just wants to be himself.

"I don't really want to be the next anybody," Davis said. "I just want to be the first Austin Davis and just keep doing what we're doing."

Davis and the Rams are coming off a 28-26 win over the Seahawks last Sunday.

"It felt good to get one this past week. I think it was much needed for our football team," Davis said of the win.

The Rams (2-4) will travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs (3-3) on Sunday.

Packers to Induct Favre into Hall of Fame, Retire Jersey in 2015

Packers to Induct Favre into Hall of Fame, Retire Jersey in 2015

Gregory Shamus/Getty Images(GREEN BAY, Wisc.) -- Brett Favre's relationship with the team he spent the majority of his career playing for is apparently just fine. Both the quarterback and the Green Bay Packers announced on Sunday that Favre will be inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame and have his number 4 jersey retired during the 2015 season.

The joint announcement originally came from Favre's website on Sunday afternoon.

"It was a tremendous honor to play 16 years for the Green Bay Packers. Now to have my name placed among others such as Starr, Hornung, Kramer, Taylor, Lambeau, Nitschke, Lombardi, Davis, White and Hutson is a special honor that I share with all of my teammates and coaches, and that would not have been possible but for the foresight of Ron Wolf, the greatest GM in the history of the NFL," Favre said in the statement.

Green Bay will make an official announcement at 1:30 p.m. on Monday with Favre participating via telephone. Packers Hall of Fame Inc. president Perry Kidder, Packers president Mark Murphy and former Packers president Bob Harlan will all take part.

Favre joined the Packers on Feb. 11, 1992 after being traded by the Atlanta Falcons who drafted him. He led Green Bay to two Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl XXXI, and also won three MVP awards for 1992-2008. Favre announced his retirement that summer but decided he wanted to return and was eventually traded to the New York Jets where he played one season before finishing his career in Minnesota, playing two more years.

Packers Reward GM Ted Thompson with Contract Extension

Packers Reward GM Ted Thompson with Contract Extension

David Dermer/Diamond Images/Getty Images(GREEN BAY, Wisc.) -- One of the best general managers in the NFL is sticking around a little longer as the Green Bay Packers are rewarding Ted Thompson with a contract extension.

Thompson's new deal is being called "a multi-year contract extension" and he will remain in charge of the football operations. His original deal was set to expire after the 2016 season.

"The more you think about it, the more you think how nuts are you that you'd walk away from something like this," Thompson said. "It's important to me. It's not my family, but I've got a lot of really good friends here and co-workers that I enjoy coming to work with every day."

Thompson is entering his 10th season as the Packers general manager, and the team has gone 86-57-1 in the regular season and 6-5 in the postseason. They also won the Super Bowl XLV.

Thompson's first draft pick came in 2004 when he selected quarterback Aaron Rodgers 24th overall.

ESPN is reporting that Nelson's new deal is for four years and worth $39 million, with an $11.5 million signing bonus.

"Jordy Nelson is an outstanding football player and a great ambassador for the Green Bay Packers," said coach Mike McCarthy. "Obviously an excellent family man. It's something that everybody's excited about and [I'm] glad to see Jordy will be here for some time. I was just made aware of it on the field. Hey, Jordy's so consistent and he shows up each and every day, performs at a very high level consistently and he's the ultimate pro."

The 29-year-old Nelson his spent his entire career with the Packers, and is entering his seventh season with the team.

Over the past three seasons, Nelson has caught 30 touchdowns. Last season he caught a career-high 85 passes for 1,314 yards.
