Astros Sign INF Jed Lowrie to 3-Year Contract

Thinkstock(HOUSTON) -- The Houston Astros have agreed to a three-year contract with free agent infielder Jed Lowrie, the team announced on Monday. He will receive a guaranteed $23 million, according to ESPN.

In 136 games with the Oakland Athletics last season, the 30-year-Lowrie batted .249 with six home runs and 50 RBIs. He also scored 59 runs and had an OBP of .321.

Lowrie previously played for Houston in 2012, where he hit .244 with 16 homers and 42 RBIs in 97 games. He was dealt to Oakland on Feb. 4, 2014 along with right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez with Houston receiving first baseman Chris Carter, right-handed pitcher Brad Peacock and catcher Max Stassi.

Lowrie’s new contract contains a club option for 2018.

Bobby Abreu Announces Retirement

Bobby Abreu Announces Retirement

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Before taking the field with the New York Mets, outfielder Bobby Abreu announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Friday.

"I have a lot of fun," Abreu said. "These young guys here are special. Even though I'm 40, they made me feel young. But I realize now that the game is for the next generation."

The 18-year veteran made his debut in 1996 for the Houston Astros, managed by Terry Collins. His career will come to an end on Sunday, with Collins as his new manager, against the Astros at Citi Field. Adding to the symmetry of his career, Abreu's first ever hit came against Bobby Jones of the Mets.

Since then, the 40-year-old has tallied 2,469 total hits, ranking 10th all-time. Of all active players, only Derek Jeter has played more games than Abreu's 2,423 contests. Abreu was a two-time All-Star and the active leader in career walks (1,475) and doubles (574).

"For sure, Bobby Abreu will be able to walk off the field with his head held high Sunday," manager Terry Collins said.

Astros Fire Bo Porter

Astros Fire Bo Porter

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(HOUSTON) -- The Houston Astros fired manager Bo Porter on Monday.

Porter was in the midst of his second year. Bench coach Dave Trembley was also let go.

"Bo's passion and energy are unparalleled, and his desire to win unquestioned," General manager Jeff Luhnow said in a statement. "This decision was not made because of our current level of competitiveness in the Major Leagues. I recognize that our win-loss record is largely a product of an organizational strategy for which I am responsible.

"... What we will seek going forward is a consistent and united message throughout the entire organization. It is essential that as an organization we create an atmosphere at the Major League level where our young players can come up and continue to develop and succeed. Ultimately, I am responsible for creating that culture, and I will do everything in my power to do so-even when it means making difficult moves like the one we made today."

The Astros were 59-79 and owned the second worst record in the league.

"This was not an easy decision to make," owner Jim Crane said in a statement. "We wish Bo nothing but the best in the future. Jeff has my full support moving forward. Our goal to bring a championship to Houston remains."

Tom Lawless takes over as interim manager.

Astros’ George Springer Suffers Setback, Out Two More Weeks

Astros’ George Springer Suffers Setback, Out Two More Weeks

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Houston Astros were hoping to get back prized rookie outfielder George Springer in the near future, but after suffering a setback to his injured quadriceps, he'll miss an additional two weeks.

Springer has been out of action since July 19, but was set to return shortly. After an MRI was performed on Springer's balky left quadriceps, doctors recommended additional time to aid in its recovery. Now, his next appearance may not come until September.

After a tough start to his rookie campaign, the 24-year-old Springer emerged as one of the best power hitters in baseball before getting hurt. In a span of 59 games, Springer hit 20 home runs and was carrying the Astros offense. Overall, Springer is hitting .231 this season with 20 home runs, 50 RBIs, and an OBP of .336.

This has been another rough season for the Astros, as they sit at 50-70, which is the third-worst record in Major League Baseball.

Marlins Land Jarred Cosart from Astros in Six-Player Deal

Marlins Land Jarred Cosart from Astros in Six-Player Deal

Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- Instead of selling off young prospects, this time, the Miami Marlins acquired them as they have landed starting pitcher Jarred Cosart along with two others from the Houston Astros.

In addition to Cosart, the Marlins acquired infielder-outfielder Kike Hernandez and outfielder Austin Wates for third baseman Colin Moran, outfielder Jake Marisnick, right-hander Francis Martes and a 2015 compensatory draft pick.

"Jarred Cosart will help us win more games and be a better ballclub, and hopefully that winds up with a playoff spot," Marlins president of baseball operations Mike Hill said.

Cosart was a top-pitching prospect not too long ago, so it's surprising the Astros decided to move on from him. In 20 starts this season, he's 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA.

Cosart along with Hernandez are expected to join the club on Friday while Wates will be assigned to Triple-A New Orleans.

The Marlins reportedly also tried to trade for John Lackey and David Price, but were unable to land either starter.

Astros Can’t Strike Deal With Top Pick

Astros Can’t Strike Deal With Top Pick

Rich Schultz/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- For just the third time in history, the top pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft goes unsigned. The Houston Astros failed to reach a deal with left-handed pitcher Brady Aiken before Friday's deadline.

The high school southpaw was originally offered a $6.5 million signing bonus, but sources say that offer was lowered when concerns about Aiken's elbow ligament rose. Aiken was the third high school pitcher ever to be taken number one overall and was the first high school lefty to go in the top five since 2002.

The MLB players association has said the union is working with Aiken to explore all possible options, as well as looking into the way Houston handled negotiations with fifth-round pick Jacob Nix.

"Today, two young men should be one step closer to realizing their dreams of becoming Major League ballplayers," Tony Clark, head of the MLBPA said in a statement. "Because of the actions of the Houston Astros, they are not. The MLBPA, the players and their advisers are exploring all legal options."

The Astros have maintained that no wrongdoing occurred in the negotiations and that Aiken's deal was "extremely fair considering all the factors involved in this case."

Astros Select Aiken with Top Pick

Astros Select Aiken with Top Pick

Rich Schultz/Getty Images(SECAUCUS, N.J.) -- The Houston Astros drafted Brady Aiken with the number one overall pick in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. Aiken, a high schooler from California, becomes just the third prep school pitcher ever taken with the top pick.

The 17-year-old southpaw, recruited by UCLA, has great command of three pitches including a fastball that tops out at 97 mph. A soon-to-be graduate of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, Aiken is the first high school lefty taken in the first five picks since 2002 when Baltimore drafted Adam Loewen with the fourth overall pick.

Houston became the first team ever to have three consecutive number one picks. The Miami Marlins selected high schooler Tyler Kolek, marking the first time two high school pitchers were taken with the top two picks in draft history.

In total, 20 pitchers were drafted in the first round, tying the record set in 2001. The Chicago White Sox selected pitcher Carlos Rodon with the third overall pick. First baseman Kyle Schwarber was the first position player taken, drafted by the Chicago Cubs with the fourth selection, while Minnesota took shortstop Nick Gordon, rounding out the top five picks.
