Young’s Late Three Helps Lakers Beat Spurs in OT

Young’s Late Three Helps Lakers Beat Spurs in OT

Christopher Trotman/Getty Images(SAN ANTONIO) -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young hit a monster three with 7.4 seconds remaining in overtime to help give the Lakers (7-16) a 112-110 win over San Antonio on Friday. Young finished with a game-high 29 points while Kobe Bryant added 22 points and nine rebounds.

"I'm so happy it ended up in my hands," Young said. "I wanted to shoot that bad, especially being on the floor watching Kobe and playing for the Lakers; nothing like those types of shots."

San Antonio (16-7) rallied from down 11 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime, but Young's shot was too much to overcome. With the shot clock about to expire, and Manu Ginobili in his face, Young let go a 30-foot prayer that found the net for a 112-110 lead. The Spurs had a chance to tie but Ginobili's three-point attempt was off the mark and time expired before another they could get another shot off.

"The last 3, Manu was everything but inside his jersey, and he had to adjust his shot in the air and kind of shoot around Manu's hands, and it goes in," Duncan said. "If you put a team in a situation like that, things like that can happen. We put the blame on ourselves for the 48, 50 minutes before it gets to that point."

The Spurs also had a chance to win it in regulation, holding possession with less than two seconds remaining. However, Duncan missed a 17-foot, turn-around jumper that forced the extra session. Duncan finished with 19 points and 18 rebounds for San Antonio.

Bryant's 22 points leaves him eight shy of tying Michael Jordan for third on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

Magic Johnson: ‘I Hope the Lakers Lose Every Game’

Magic Johnson: ‘I Hope the Lakers Lose Every Game’

Akpanudosen/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Hall of Famer Magic Johnson thinks the Lakers should cash it in this season and hope for a high draft pick.

"I hope the Lakers lose every game," Johnson told reporters at a promotional event Tuesday in New York City. "Because if you're going to lose, lose. And I'm serious."

The Lakers are tied for the second worst record in the NBA and finished last year with a 27-55 record, which was the worst 82-game stretch in franchise history.

"I don't see teams tanking. It doesn't happen. Maybe there are certain teams in the league -- and this is not one of them -- where ownership sits up there in their office and they're crossing their fingers quietly and hoping," Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant said. "But the players themselves? Never. Players play. Players play and players try to win every single game. That's just what we do."

Lakers head coach Byron Scott played with Johnson and wasn't looking too much into those comments.

"It's more of a laughing matter to me than anything," Scott said. "I know Ervin and how competitive he is and I understand where he's coming from -- 'Yeah, lose every game and hopefully you'll get the No. 1 pick.' That doesn't guarantee that you're going to get the No. 1 pick. You go out here and try to win as much as you can to try to create that culture of winning again instead of having that loser's mentality. That's how I look at it."

Lakers Win Consecutive Games for First Time This Year

Lakers Win Consecutive Games for First Time This Year

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(HOUSTON) -- For the first time in the 2014-15 season, the Los Angeles Lakers won consecutive games with a 98-92 win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. Kobe Bryant led the way with 29 points, seven assists, and five rebounds for the Lakers (3-9).

"Look, we had a bad start," Bryant said. "Are we a 3-9 team? No. We're a much better team than that. We got off to a really bad start, but we'll (get better)."

Trailing by four with less than a minute to play, Los Angeles used a 7-1 run to take a 94-92 lead and pick up the victory. Nick Young scored 16 points in just his second game of the season, scoring 17 in Tuesday night's win. Young added a pair of free throws late to seal the win.

The Rockets (9-3) were playing without center Dwight Howard who missed the game with a knee injury. James Harden paced Houston with 24 points while three other players scored in double figures. Despite shooting 15-of-38 from beyond the arc, the Rockets turned the ball over 17 times and were out-rebounded 47-38 in the loss.

It was the first meeting between the Western Conference foes after Houston's opening night win in Los Angeles. That contest featured a small spat between Howard and Bryant, heightening the drama going into Wednesday's game.

Lakers Pick Up First Win of the Season

Lakers Pick Up First Win of the Season

NBA via Los Angeles Lakers(LOS ANGELES) -- The wait is finally over. The Los Angeles Lakers won their first game of the season on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets.

The Lakers had been 0-5, the worst start in the team's Kobe Bryant-era. The team also avoided losing six straight to open a season for the first time since 1957-58, when the team played in Minneapolis.

"We got to start somewhere," Bryant said after the win.

Bryant and Jeremy Lin led the way for the Lakers as they each scored 21 points. Carlos Boozer also chipped in 16 points.

"Guys weren't just looking to get the ball to Kobe and step out of the way," Lakers head coach Byron Scott said of the win. "I talked to Jeremy before the game about being more assertive on both ends of the floor."

After their win on Sunday, the Philadelphia 76ers find themselves as the only winless team left in the NBA. On Sunday, they lost to the Toronto Raptors and fell to 0-7 in the season.

Lakers Offer Byron Scott Head Coaching Spot

Lakers Offer Byron Scott Head Coaching Spot

Chris Chambers/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- It has been almost three months since the Los Angeles Lakers have had a head coach. On Friday, the team reportedly offered the job to Byron Scott and are currently negotiating terms of a contract.

League sources said that a verbal offer was made to Scott after he spoke with Lakers owner Jim Buss on Thursday night.

Scott played for the Lakers from 1983-1993 and again in 1996-97 season, winning three NBA Championships while playing with Magic Johnson. In more than 13 seasons as a head coach, Scott has roamed the sidelines with the New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers. He was hired in 2010 by the Cavaliers just days before LeBron James left for Miami and spent the last four seasons in Cleveland.

Superstar Kobe Bryant, who played with Scott as a rookie in 1996, gave his endorsement of the hiring. The Lakers have not had a coach since Mike D'Antoni resigned back in April. Scott becomes the fourth head coach for Los Angeles since 2011.

Melo Meets with Knicks and Lakers

Melo Meets with Knicks and Lakers

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Thursday was a busy day for one of the NBA's most sought after free agents. After spending two hours meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers, Carmelo Anthony also spent time with his most recent team in the New York Knicks.

Anthony sat down with members of both team's leadership and discussed possible terms of contracts as he enters his first ever free agency period. The Lakers contingent was reportedly to include star Kobe Bryant, but the small forward was unable to get back to California in time following a family vacation in Europe. Bryant did say he planned to met with Anthony later in the day.

Following a two and a half hour meeting, Los Angeles told the small forward they would be willing to offer him maximum contract worth $96 million over four years. If Anthony chose to stay with the Knicks, he could garner a five-year deal with a $129 million price tag. New York reiterated to Anthony that he would be given such a contract if he chose to stay.

Anthony has also met with Chicago, Dallas, and Houston during this free agency period.
