(12) Notre Dame Edges Miami (FL), 75-70

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(SOUTH BEND, Ind.) -- Led by guard Jerian Grant, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to rally past the Miami Hurricanes 75-70.

Now at 17-2, the Irish have equaled their best start through 19 games, matching the 1978-79 team.

Miami opened the second half with a 13-2 run to take its largest lead. The Irish offense proceeded to turn it on in the second half. Making just two of their first 16 3-point tries, Notre Dame proceeded to hit seven of their next nine 3-point attempts.

Grant led the rally as he scored 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the floor to go along with eight assists. Guard Pat Connaughton had a double-double in the game, scoring ten points while pulling down 11 rebounds.

Sheldon McClellan led the Hurricanes with 17 points while Ja'Quan Newton came off the bench to chip in 16 points and five assists in the loss.

Notre Dame picked up a much needed win as they now sit at third in the ACC behind Virginia and Syracuse. Miami (FL) now sits at 8th in the conference.

Notre Dame Wins Music City Bowl

Notre Dame Wins Music City Bowl

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Notre Dame dropped five of its last six regular season games, but ended the season with a bowl win. Senior kicker Kyle Brindza's 32-yard field goal as time expired gave the Fighting Irish (8-5) a 31-28 win over Louisiana State University in the Music City Bowl on Tuesday night.

"To leave a program so historic like this in this kind of fashion is great," Brindza said. "It's a blessing for me, but also to be able to help win a game for all my teammates is a bigger blessing."

Brindza had missed six of his last nine field goal attempts as Notre Dame lost its final four games of the regular season. Their rebound in the postseason was due to a strong performance from quarterback Malik Zaire, who was making his debut for the Irish. Zaire threw for the game's opening touchdown and scored again on a 7-yard run in the second quarter.

LSU (8-5) rallied from a 21-14 halftime deficit to take a 28-21 lead on Leonard Fournette's 98-yard touchdown run. However, the Irish quickly knotted the score again thanks to C.J. Prosise's 50-yard scamper. After blocking a Tigers field goal attempt early in the fourth, Notre Dame controlled possession to help set up the game-winning kick.

The game did have some controversy at the end of the first half. LSU's holder, Brad Kragthorpe, took the snap on a field goal attempt and headed for the end zone but was ruled short. Video review upheld the call, a decision that coach Les Miles was not happy about.

"The guy that carried the ball, forcing it, said he absolutely scored," Miles said. "Kids will be kids, but this guy's going to tell the truth."

Golson Accounts for 3 TDs as (11) Notre Dame Thumps Purdue

Golson Accounts for 3 TDs as (11) Notre Dame Thumps Purdue

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Everett Golson threw two touchdowns and ran for another to lead (11) Notre Dame past Purdue 30-14 Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 200 pound senior quarterback accounted for at least three touchdowns for the third-straight game, and scored on a 15-yard dash at the end of the second quarter to erase the Fighting Irish's first deficit of the season, and give them the lead heading into halftime.

"He just understands the game," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said of Golson. "The game is slower for him than it was when he was here in his first year. The game has slowed down. He sees the field better. He can see it better. He's not there yet. We missed some things tonight that would have changed the complexion of the game." Notre Dame (3-0) would outscore Purdue (1-2) 13-0 in the second half, giving the Irish its seventh-straight victory over the Boilermakers. The two teams, which have played each other every year since 1946, will now take a five year break before resuming their rivalry in 2020.

The Fighting Irish have won their first three games of the season for the second time in three years -- they last did that in 1987 when they did it in four-straight seasons.

Brian Kelly ‘In Shock’ over Investigation

Brian Kelly ‘In Shock’ over Investigation

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(SOUTH BEND, Ind. ) -- Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly addressed the academic fraud investigation under way that involves four of his players on Saturday.

Notre Dame suspended DaVaris Daniels, KeiVarae Russell, Ishaq Williams, and Kendall Moore following the news on Friday.

According to ABC's Ron Claiborne, suspensions would not just affect the four players but the entire football program, which just two years ago went undefeated in the regular season and to the national championship game.

"I knew coming to Notre Dame, and one of the reasons why I wanted to come here, was there are some core values as one of the preeminent Catholic institutions that you just can't compromise on, and that's integrity," Kelly said. "And if you see that something is going on that's not right -- and obviously through this investigation they found this out -- it's important that it's addressed. And so I applaud the university for doing that."

Notre Dame now says it will voluntarily forfeit all of the games it won with the four players on the field if ultimately they are found to have cheated.

"Now, along the way, I've lost a starting quarterback and some key players. But I came here because I wanted to be associated with a university that had those standards," Kelly continued.  "And I'm disappointed, I'm saddened in a way for these young men, because they're good kids. They made some bad decisions along the way -- and I'm not throwing these four in that category yet, obviously. But we can talk about Everett [Golson], certainly, in that situation."

"As it relates to the recruitment of the young men here, I think we've brought in the right young men. I think we continue to have to do a better job educating them. We have to do a better job of providing them the resources. Look, this is never a one-sided issue. We have to internally look at providing our student-athletes all of the resources necessary that if, in fact, they took shortcuts, that they don't. And we have to look hard at that. And that's something that will ensue over this issue."

Notre Dame Investigating Academic Fraud

Notre Dame Investigating Academic Fraud

Elsa/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The University of Notre Dame is investigating four football players for allegedly violating the university's honor code by receiving improper help on classwork.

ESPN is reporting the two players are wide receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive back KeiVarae Russell, defensive lineman Ishaq Williams, and linebacker Kendall Moore were among the players involved, along with some non-student-athletes.

"Integrity is at the heart of our mission and academic misconduct will not be tolerated at Notre Dame," Rev. John I. Jenkins, the university president, said in a statement posted on the school's website. "If the suspected improprieties are proven, we will use the experience to reinforce among our students the importance of honesty in all that they do.

"We are also examining ways of better conveying to students that they can avail themselves of legitimate academic assistance without resorting to cheating."

Williams and Moore are seniors this season, Daniels and Russell are juniors. Notre Dame are ranked 17th in the USA Today/Coach's poll.

The university have also come out and said that they will vacate any wins as a result of the investigation, if necessary.

Everett Golson Takes Back Notre Dame’s Starting QB Job

Everett Golson Takes Back Notre Dame’s Starting QB Job

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images(SOUTH BEND, Ind.) -- After missing all off last season due to suspension, Everett Golson is Notre Dame's starting quarterback once again.Golson, who in 2012 led the Fighting Irish to the BCS national title game, beat out redshirt freshman Malik Zaire to reclaim the job. The decision was announced Wednesday by Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly."Generally when you look at making that decision, I'm using from January through right now as the basis of that decision, so winter workouts, how he handled himself with the team, our workouts, his spring practice and then his leadership in the summer and in camp here," Kelly said. "I think he's put himself in a position to get that opportunity to be our starter against Rice."Golson, 21, was suspended for the 2013 season for what he called "poor academic judgement."In 2012, the 6-foot, 200-pound Golson completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 2,405 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 298 yards and six touchdowns. Golson and Notre Dame start their season August 30 at home versus Rice.
