Mariners Place Starting Pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma on the DLMike McGinnis/Getty Images(SEATTLE) --The 2015 regular season has gotten off to a disastrous season for Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma. After two poor starts, the team has placed Iwakuma on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain. "[We] felt it best to back him off and put him on the DL to give him time to make sure this thing, it's a long season we don't want this thing to be an aggravated issue as we go through the next 5½ months," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "We'll know a little more tonight. At this point we're hoping it's nothing more than shoulder fatigue and something very small." The team wanted Iwakuma to throw a bullpen session on Friday and determine where he was from a health standpoint. Not only did his shoulder not feel any better, he felt stiffness in his back and the team decided to shut him down. In three starts this season, Iwakuma is 0-1 with a 6.61 ERA. Felix Hernandez Leaves Game with Tight Quad

Felix Hernandez Leaves Game with Tight Quad Mike Stobe/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif.) -- Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez was taken out of his start versus the Oakland Athletics, Sunday, after experiencing tightness in his right quadriceps muscle. The decision to remove Hernandez from the game was described as precautionary by the Mariners.Hernandez had allowed eight hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out one.Despite being behind 3-0 when Hernandez left the game, the Mariners rallied and ended up winning in 10 innings 8-7 over the Athletics.Hernandez receives a no-decision in the victory, meaning he hasn't lost a game at the Oakland Coliseum since 2009.The former Cy Young Award winner was brilliant in his first start of this season: he pitched seven innings against the Los Angeles Angels, allowing two hits, one earned run, and one walk while striking out 10. Report: Mariners Sign Rickie Weeks

Report: Mariners Sign Rickie Weeks Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(SEATTLE, Wa.) -- The Seattle Mariners are adding depth to their infield. The team will sign Rickie Weeks to a one-year, $2 million deal, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.  The 32-year-old Weeks spent his entire ten year career with the Milwaukee Brewers. He signed a four year extension with the team in 2011, but the team declined an $11.5 million option after his production at the plate slipped in the past few years. Weeks will likely spell Robinson Cano on days of rest. Cano signed a 10-year, $240 million deal last season with the Mariners. In his first season with the Mariners, Cano batted .314, smacked 14 home runs and drove in 82 RBI. In 2011, Weeks was named to his only All-Star game where he batted .269, hit 20 home runs and drove in 49 RBI. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Ichiro Not Ready to Retire

Ichiro Not Ready to Retire Rich Schulz/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Even at age 41, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki has no plans to retire and even hopes to play in 2015. “I have every intention of playing in the Major Leagues next year,” Ichiro said during an MLB Network interview. “Where will that be? I cannot tell you because baseball is not an individual sport and so it’s not just up to my feeling that I want to play. Somebody has to feel that they want to give me the opportunity to play. But I have every intention of playing.” Last season while primarily serving as a fourth outfielder, Ichiro hit .284 with 42 runs scored and 15 stolen basses. While he may not be the dominant hitter he once was, Ichiro is still a solid outfielder who is just 156 hits away from 3,000 for his Major League career. In 14 Major League seasons, Ichiro has batted .317 while averaging 203 hits per season. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

The 32-year-old was fourth in the NL in hits with 177, a career high, while also hitting 29 doubles in his first year with the club. Both awards were voted on by beat writers from all 30 Major League teams on MLB.com, each of whom selected one candidate in each league. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Mariners Suspend Jesus Montero the Rest of the Season

Mariners Suspend Jesus Montero the Rest of the Season Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Following a bizarre incident involving an ice cream sandwich, the Seattle Mariners have suspended catcher/designated hitter Jesus Montero the rest of the season. This past Thursday, during a minor league game for the Boise Hawks, Mariners scout Butch Baccala sent over an ice cream sandwich to the dugout for Montero as a way to heckle him. Montero has battled weight issues this season, reportedly showing up nearly 40 pounds overweight to spring training earlier this year. Angered by Baccala's attempt to embarrass him, Montero reportedly tried to go after him in the stands with a bat. "I want to apologize on behalf of the Mariners franchise to the Boise Hawks and their fans," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "We recognize that fans, including children, were impacted by this incident, and the language that was used. We recognize the severity of this incident, and want to assure the Hawks and their fans that it will be dealt with appropriately. In addition, I want to thank Todd Rahr, president and general manager of the Boise Hawks, for his assistance in helping me ascertain what occurred last night." Montero was acquired by the Mariners in 2012 for Michale Pineda. He's struggled to stay in the Majors and produce like the top prospect he once was. The 24-year-old Montero is hitting just .251 during his time with Seattle. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
