Ichiro Not Ready to Retire

Ichiro Not Ready to Retire

Rich Schulz/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Even at age 41, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki has no plans to retire and even hopes to play in 2015.

“I have every intention of playing in the Major Leagues next year,” Ichiro said during an MLB Network interview. “Where will that be? I cannot tell you because baseball is not an individual sport and so it’s not just up to my feeling that I want to play. Somebody has to feel that they want to give me the opportunity to play. But I have every intention of playing.”

Last season while primarily serving as a fourth outfielder, Ichiro hit .284 with 42 runs scored and 15 stolen basses.

While he may not be the dominant hitter he once was, Ichiro is still a solid outfielder who is just 156 hits away from 3,000 for his Major League career. In 14 Major League seasons, Ichiro has batted .317 while averaging 203 hits per season.

Young, McGehee MLB Comeback Players

Young, McGehee MLB Comeback Players

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Seattle Mariners pitcher Chris Young was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year while Miami's Casey McGehee third baseman earned the award in the National League as announced on Friday.

Young was 12-9 in 2014 with a 3.65 earned run average in 30 appearances for the Mariners, including 29 starts. The 35-year-old pitcher missed almost all of 2013 with injuries and made just nine minor league starts. His 12 victories marked the first time since 2006 he posted double-digit wins.

After a year playing in Japan, McGehee hit .287 with four home runs and 76 RBIs for the Marlins. The 32-year-old was fourth in the NL in hits with 177, a career high, while also hitting 29 doubles in his first year with the club.

Both awards were voted on by beat writers from all 30 Major League teams on MLB.com, each of whom selected one candidate in each league.

Mariners Suspend Jesus Montero the Rest of the Season

Mariners Suspend Jesus Montero the Rest of the Season

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Following a bizarre incident involving an ice cream sandwich, the Seattle Mariners have suspended catcher/designated hitter Jesus Montero the rest of the season.

This past Thursday, during a minor league game for the Boise Hawks, Mariners scout Butch Baccala sent over an ice cream sandwich to the dugout for Montero as a way to heckle him.

Montero has battled weight issues this season, reportedly showing up nearly 40 pounds overweight to spring training earlier this year.

Angered by Baccala's attempt to embarrass him, Montero reportedly tried to go after him in the stands with a bat.

"I want to apologize on behalf of the Mariners franchise to the Boise Hawks and their fans," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "We recognize that fans, including children, were impacted by this incident, and the language that was used. We recognize the severity of this incident, and want to assure the Hawks and their fans that it will be dealt with appropriately. In addition, I want to thank Todd Rahr, president and general manager of the Boise Hawks, for his assistance in helping me ascertain what occurred last night."

Montero was acquired by the Mariners in 2012 for Michale Pineda. He's struggled to stay in the Majors and produce like the top prospect he once was. The 24-year-old Montero is hitting just .251 during his time with Seattle.

Angels Walk-Off for 30th Comeback Win

Angels Walk-Off for 30th Comeback Win

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(ANAHEIM, Calif.) -- The Los Angeles Angels scored two runs off former teammate Fernando Rodney to walk-off against Seattle (52-46) for the second time in three days.

The 6-5 victory was the 30th time this season that the Angels (59-38) have come from behind to get a win.

What made the win a little more intriguing was the back-and-forth between the Angels and their old closer. Rodney, who entered the game with one out in the eighth, used his trademark "bow-and-arrow" celebration after Kole Calhoun flew out to end the inning.

That stirred up the LA dugout as Albert Pujols doubled to score Mike Trout and tie the game off of Rodney. The two then traded arrows before Grant Green singled home the winning run, handing Rodney the loss.

"That's his thing," Pujols said of the celebration. "I've known Rodney for 15 years, so we go way back. And every time I see him, I tell him I'm going to do that to him if I get a big hit against him."

Rodney said after the game that he was directing the arrow towards the Angels fans who booed up him upon entering the game. The 12-year veteran spent two seasons with Los Angeles and was just 17-for-28 in save opportunities.

Mariners Hold Off Angels 3-2 in 12 Innings

Mariners Hold Off Angels 3-2 in 12 Innings

Rob Carr/Getty Images(ANAHEIM, Calif.) --  It's been just two games since the All-Star break, but the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels have already played a combined 28 innings.

Logan Morrison hit a go-ahead RBI double in the 12th inning as the Mariners held on to beat the Angels 3-2 on Saturday night.  Los Angeles won 3-2 in 16 innings on Friday night.

"I don't think our guys are tired. They're resilient," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "It's hard to win games at this level regardless of who you're playing. We just happened to be playing the team with the second-best record in baseball.

"It was tough, but just like last night, in about five minutes, we've got to turn the page and get ready for (Sunday)."

Kyle Seager hit a leadoff double in the 12th inning off of Angels reliever Joe Thatcher (0-1). Morrison lined a single to left to drive him in.  Pinch-hitter Justin Smoak added an RBI single to give the Mariners a two-run cushion.

After taking the loss Friday, Dominic Leone (3-2) pitched one-plus inning for the Mariners to earn the victory.  Leone gave up a leadoff home run to David Freese in the bottom of the 12th inning and was pulled from the game.  Charlie Furbush stepped in and recorded the final three outs for the save.
