Hawks Win 8th Straight, Top Wizards 120-89

Hawks Win 8th Straight, Top Wizards 120-89

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(ATLANTA) -- The Atlanta Hawks took care of the Washington Wizards (25-12) 120-89 for their eighth straight win on Sunday.

Kyle Korver led the way with 19 points and was followed by DeMarre Carroll with 16 in the victory.

"At this point, I don't think we've played a better game," Korver said. "We had that 6-minute stretch in the second quarter, but otherwise that's about as good as we've done this year."

Atlanta (29-8) has now won their last 22 of 24 games and leads the Eastern Conference for the first time this late in the season in 21 years.

"This is my eighth year, and I've never seen us like this besides the playoffs," Hawks forward Al Horford said. "I feel like the fans are starting to come out, they're starting to believe and it's exciting to see. We have a good team and we need their support."

The Hawks defense held John Wall to 15 points and Bradley Beal scored 12 in the loss.

Wizards Cruise Past the Knicks, 102-91

Wizards Cruise Past the Knicks, 102-91

NBA via Washington Wizards(NEW YORK) -- Washington Wizards point guard showed a national audience just why he's become one of the best guards in the NBA on Christmas Day as he led the team past the New York Knicks for a 102-91 victory.

Wall finished the game with 24 points, six rebounds, and 11 assists. He leads all Eastern Conference guards in assists, and second overall in the NBA.

It was Wall's ninth game this season with at least 20 points and 10 assists, the most in the NBA.

"I'm just a feisty guy that likes to compete," Wall said. "And I want to win games."

Even though they only won by 11 points, the game was never close. The Wizards led as many as 22 points during the contest and never trailed at any point.

Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony did all he could to keep the team in it, as he scored a game-high 34 points.

The Wizards improved to 20-8 while the Knicks fell to 5-26.

Wizards Soar Past Heat, 107-86

Wizards Soar Past Heat, 107-86

Christopher Trotman/Getty Images(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- The Washington Wizards hit 10 3-pointers and shot 54.2 percent (39-of-72) to beat the Miami Heat 107-86 on Monday night. The Wizards (11-5) led by 15 points at halftime, 64-49, and held Miami (9-8) to 0-of-12 shooting from distance in the second half.

"We did a good job of staying home and getting a hand in their face," Washington head coach Randy Wittman said. "They missed some, too. It wasn't all us. They had some pretty good looks they missed."

John Wall had 18 points and 13 assists in the win while Rasual Butler paced the team with 23 points. The Wizards never trailed in the game, leading by as many as 25, and saw four players score in double figures.

Meanwhile, Miami got 21 points from Chris Bosh and 20 from Dwayne Wade. The Heat's shooting woes only escalated at the charity stripe as the team was just 18-for-30 (60 percent) on free-throw attempts.

"I don't think we've gotten to the defense we've wanted all year," said Wade, who was playing in his second game back following a hamstring injury. "We're still fairly new; a lot of the guys are still confused at what we're trying to do."

Paul Pierce Joining the Wizards

Paul Pierce Joining the Wizards

Claus Andersen/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Paul Pierce will don new colors next season. On Saturday, the small forward signed a two-year deal worth $11 million with the Washington Wizards.

Pierce, who spent the 2013-14 season with the Brooklyn Nets, signed a contract that includes a player option for next summer. The Wizards went after Pierce once swingman Trevor Ariza signed a deal with the Houston Rockets.

The ten-time All-Atar averaged just 13.5 points per game, playing only 28 minutes per contest last year with the Nets. Pierce had also garnered interest from such teams as the Dallas Mavericks, Rockets, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Pierce, 36, joined Brooklyn as part of a mega-trade with the Boston Celtics that included Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry.

Marcin Gortat Agrees to Five-Year Deal with Wizards

Marcin Gortat Agrees to Five-Year Deal with Wizards

Brian A. Westerholt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Marcin Gortat will be staying in Washington after he agreed to a new five-year deal worth $60 million with the Wizards on Tuesday.

"I'm proud to say Washington will be my home," Gortat posted to his twitter account on Tuesday.

Gortat was one of the top targets to bring back for Washington and both sides met earlier in the week to discuss his future with the team.

The deal can't officially be signed until July 10 when the league moratorium is lifted.

Gortat was huge for the Wizards off the bench this past season, averaging 13.2 points and 9.5 rebounds.

The Wizards made the playoffs for the first time since 2008.  They'll shift their attention now to re-signing forward Trevor Ariza.

Indiana Closes Out Wizards, Face Heat Next

Indiana Closes Out Wizards, Face Heat Next

Rob Carr/Getty Images(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Despite a stumbling first round victory, the Indiana Pacers looked back to form on Thursday night when they beat Washington 93-80 to finish off the series four games to two. Indiana now advances to the Eastern Conference Finals to face defending champion Miami in a rematch of last year's conference finals.

"We're ready to go," said Pacers head coach Frank Vogel. "I like the way we played this series. We have nothing but the utmost respect for the champs and we're excited to have another crack at them."

The Game Six win was not an easy one for the Pacers as they blew a 16-point second half lead before using their defense to pull away late. Washington was held scoreless for more than four minutes in the second quarter, giving Indiana a 52-40 halftime advantage. That was eventually erased, and the Wizards took a 74-73 lead with 8:30 to play.

However, David West came right back and hit a jumper to put the Pacers ahead for good. That basket triggered a 20-6 run to close out the game -- and the series. West finished the game with 29 points, including 18 in the second half, to pace all scorers.

John Wall was held to just 12 points for the Wizards and was 0-4 from three-point range. Marcin Gortat was Washington's leading scorer with 19 points. The Wizards advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2005 and won a second round game for the first since 1982.

It has been a puzzling season for Indiana, who held a 46-13 record on March 2 before limping into the playoffs. After being pushed to seven games by eighth-seeded Atlanta in the first round, and losing Game 1 at home to Washington, the Pacers played impressively on the road and are 5-4 away from home in the postseason.

Indiana will now host the back-to-back champs in Game One on Sunday in Indianapolis. The Pacers and Heat went a full seven games last season with Miami defeating Indiana 99-76 in the decisive game.

Heat Advance to Eastern Conference Finals

Heat Advance to Eastern Conference Finals

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(MIAMI) --  Don't look now, but the Miami Heat are back in the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth year in a row.

LeBron James and Dwayne Wade combined to score 57 points as the Heat rallied to defeat the Brooklyn Nets 96-94 on Wednesday night, winning their second-round matchup in five games.

"When we met the first day for prep, we said the No. 1 key, overwhelmingly the No. 1 key in this series, was great mental stability," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after the two-time defending champions won their 10th straight playoff series.

The Nets led by eight with under five minutes remaining and were looking to take the series back to Brooklyn for Game 6. The Heat went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good, while the Nets missed nine straight shots. Ray Allen hit a huge three-pointer to give Miami a 93-91 lead with 32 seconds remaining.

"Give the Heat credit," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "They were attacking there in the fourth quarter. We were attacking. Both teams were attacking. They made plays, they made shots and we didn't."

Joe Johnson led the Nets with 34 points, while Paul Pierce chipped in 19.

Miami will face either the Indiana Pacers or the Washington Wizards in the Eastern Conference finals.
