GETTY 103113 WallStreet? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1383253820316iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The markets Thursday closed down for the session, but up for the month.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 73 points at 15,545.75. The Nasdaq Composite gave up 11 points for the day at 3,919.71. The S&P 500 dropped seven points to 1,756.54.

October was especially good for the S&P, which rose five percent.

A lot of people may be finding jobs — or maybe they’re not looking for work.  The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits dropped by 10,000 last week, but the less-volatile four-week average was up by almost as much.

Home prices, meanwhile, may be going up, but mortgages are cheaper this week.  Freddie Mac says the average rate for a 30-year loan is 4.10 percent. A 15-year loan’s less than three and a quarter.
