Italian President Announces Resignation
Published at(ROME) — Italian President Giorgio Napolitano announced his resignation on Wednesday, citing his advanced age as part of the reason.
Napolitano, 89, was re-elected in April 2013, after a deadlocked election. He explained Wednesday that his age made it difficult to perform the duties of the office.
Italy’s six-month span during which they held the presidency of the European Union ended on Tuesday.
Napolitano served as president for about nine years. His duties will be assumed by the President of the Parliament, Piero Grasso, until a new president is sworn in.
