Margaret Cho Defends Golden Globes Character

Paul Drinkwater/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — Margaret Cho is comfortable with the sketches she performed at the Golden Globe Awards, even though some viewers felt they were racist.
In a recurring bit throughout Sunday night’s Golden Globes telecast on NBC, the Korean-American comedienne played a North Korean Army officer and Hollywood Foreign Press Association member who criticized the ceremony. It was intended to mock North Korea’s objection to the film The Interview, but there were critics who didn’t see the humor in it.
An article from the editors of New York magazine’s Vulture that commented on the “highs and lows” of the Golden Globes stated that Cho’s bit “managed a trio of awards-show sins: It was unfunny, racist, and incredibly long.” That sentiment was shared by a number of Twitter users, too.
Cho is making no apologies for her Golden Globes appearance, though. She tweeted on Monday, “I’m of mixed North/South Korean descent — you imprison, starve and brainwash my people you get made fun of by me #hatersgonhate #FreeSpeech.”
She added, “I’m not playing the race card. I’m playing the rice card. #hatersgonwait #winnersgonpun.”
