Pope Francis Names 20 New Cardinals
Published at(ROME) — Pope Francis has named 20 cardinals, making the Catholic hierarchy more diverse.
The pope told crowds gathered at St. Peter’s Square Sunday morning, that during the gathering of cardinals, he’ll convene a meeting to ask the men to reflect about the reform needed in the Vatican’s administrative bureaucracy.
Fifteen of the 20 cardinals are under the age of 80 and therefore can vote in the conclaves that elect new popes. They come from every continent and 14 different countries including Tonga, New Zealand, Cape Verde, and Myanmar– Asian and African countries where the Catholic church is still attracting followers.
The new appointees will become part of the all-male college of Cardinals during a ceremony mid-February.
