The company expected large usership with swarms of people spending the evening out to celebrate the new year. At the busiest point of the night, the company said, Uber partners were dropping off more than 58 passengers per second.
With some concern that the company’s “surge pricing,” which brings higher prices for passengers when more demand exists, would cost partygoers an arm and a leg, Uber says that more than 50 percent of those surged trips occurred between 12:30 and 2:30 a.m. In other words, most trips throughout the night — in particular passengers taking Uber on their way out for the evening — were not surged.
The company also added that 20,000 people downloaded the app after midnight to ensure a safe trip home.
