Francesco Schettino, 54, was sentenced to 16 years in prison Wednesday for his role in the Jan. 13, 2012 shipwreck, which resulted in the most costly maritime recovery operation in history. Thirty-two people died that night.

Schettino was found guilty of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. But despite his conviction, he remains a free man.

The captain has two appeals which could take years, given Italy’s clogged court system. It’s possible Schettino may never go to prison.
