According to Copenhagen Police, the individual had gone to a residence that was under observation. When hailed by police, the individual opened fire on the officers, who fired back, striking the man. No police officers were injured in the exchange.

Police are investigating whether the man was involved in the earlier shootings at a cafe and a synagogue.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called Sunday “a sad morning” with two innocent people having been killed in the Saturday shootings. “Nobody shall get away with attacking the…Danish community,” Thorning-Schmidt said.

On Saturday afternoon, an individual fired a weapon at a Copenhagen cafe, which was the site of a free-speech discussion. The French ambassador to Denmark, Francois Zimeray, and Swedish author and cartoonist Lars Vilks were in attendance. Three people were injured and one was killed in that shooting. One person who witnessed the attack said that “about 20 or 30 shots” were fired.

Later on Saturday, a 37-year-old man was shot and killed near a Copenhagen synagogue. The man was reportedly working as a security guard for a bat mitzvah. Two policeman were also shot at the synagogue.

Police say that they know the identity of the suspect and believe that the individual shot by police was responsible for both shootings on Saturday.

The shootings came just about one month after a fatal shooting at the offices of French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. The magazine had published cartoons showing the Prophet Muhammad, angering many Muslims.

In the days that followed, a police officer was killed and four others slain at a kosher grocery store inside the French capital.
