The decision by the state Supreme Court, which followed the marriage of two women in Austin, prevents the issuance of licenses to other homosexual couples seeking to wed.

Texas law already prevents same-sex marriages but State District Judge David Wahlberg told Travis County to issue a license to Sarah Goodfriend and Suzanne Bryant for health reasons. Goodfriend has ovarian cancer and her future is described as “uncertain.”

The couple got married Thursday but Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton indicated Thursday he would attempt to void the union.

At present, 37 states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriage. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule later this year about whether gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry.
