The first update since the new operating system was unwrapped last November includes practical new additions to help users take control of their mobile experience — adding a welcome layer to the latest operating system that has put a strong emphasis on creating an aesthetically pleasing user experience.

Users of the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop update will now be able to use more than one SIM card on a device equipped with several slots, allowing people to share one device or better control their monthly phone bill, according to a blog post from Dave Burke, vice president of Android.

Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices, along with future Android phones and tablets shipped with 5.1, will come with a mechanism that keeps a lost or stolen device locked until the user signs in with their Google account.

The extra level of protection even works if someone resets the device to factory settings, according to Google.

High definition voice calling is the third major update for Android 5.1 Lollipop, allowing for an even clearer phone conversation between compatible devices. Burke also said users will be able to join Wi-Fi networks and control their Bluetooth connected devices easily from the quick settings area of the updated phone.
