The Ireland Department of Health says that the ruling does not impact older drugs — such as heroin, cocaine or cannabis. Instead, “it does affect the possession of certain newer psychoactive substances.” The agency says that sale and supply of psychoactive substances remains an offense, but possession of certain drugs — like ecstasy, ketamine and mushrooms — is not illegal.

The issue came up after the Court of Appeal determined that the law making them illegal was in violation of the country’s constitution.

The legislation to remedy the situation will be completed overnight Tuesday night into Wednesday. It will then go into effect on Thursday morning.
