Meric/Getty Images(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) — With 13 seconds remaining in the game, SMU center Yanick Moreira was called for goaltending on a Bryce Alford 3-point attempt, giving No. 11 UCLA the lead and ultimately the win over the No. 6 Mustangs 60-59 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

“I had a pretty good look at it because I shot it,” Alford said. “From my angle, I saw Kevon (Looney) and another player going after it, and I was confused because he went up and grabbed it on its way to the rim.

“I don’t know if it would have gone in or not, but he definitely grabbed it on the way.”

The officials reviewed the play to make sure Alford was behind the 3-point line, but they said the goaltending call wasn’t reviewable.

SMU’s Nic Moore scored 24 points but missed two go-ahead shots at the end of the game to send the Bruins into the third round of the tournament.

Alford finished the night with 27 points, making 9-11 3-point shots.

SMU (27-7) was appearing in its first tournament since 1993.

UCLA (21-13) advances to take on No. 14 UAB which upset No. 3 Iowa State earlier in the day.
