Derek broke the toe on his right foot, and sprained his left ankle; he also has a bone bruise on that ankle.  He’s staying in L.A. to recuperate this week, and will not be able to participate in his other project — the New York Spring Spectacular at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

ABC said in a statement, “While it remains unclear at this time if Derek will be able to perform on the Monday, April 27 episode of Dancing with the Stars, his partner Nastia Liukin will train in Los Angeles this week with pro-dancer Sasha Farber to prepare for the live show.”

Derek’s fellow DWTS pro and best friend Mark Ballas tells ABC Radio that he’s “just praying for good news from the MRI,” adding, “When someone you’ve been that close to for twenty years, and you’ve grown up doing all the same things together, goes down, that hurts.”

As for whether or not Derek will perform on Monday, Mark says, “If it were up to Derek, yeah. But if that’s the right move? Probably not. So, we’ll see.”
