The twin engine Piper Navajo was inbound to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport when it crashed into a nature preserve at about 4:30 p.m. after the pilot declared an emergency, said Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Our crews made an aggressive attack on the fire, extinguished the fire within minutes,” Division Chief Chantal Botting of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue told the Sun Sentinel. “Unfortunately, it was discovered that there were four souls on board and all four perished.”

The plane reportedly took off from Orlando at 3:21 p.m. Sunday.

The names of the deceased have not been released, pending notification of relatives, officials said.

Authorities said no one on the ground was injured.
