Fresh Is Best When It Comes to Supermarkets, Survey Finds

According to a new survey from Consumer Reports of nearly 63,000 subscribers, it’s those with the freshest products.
“America’s freshest supermarkets also happen to be their best. Those chains that ranked highly in terms of the quality of their perishables also tended to be great overall. In other words the cleanest stores, the most competitive prices, the best service,” explains Tod Marks, a senior projects editor at Consumer Reports.
The magazine says the best supermarket chains have remained fairly constant over the years.
“The interesting finding about our ratings is the top ten is largely unchanged over the past decade. The stores that do well and have done well continue to do so. Wegmans, Publix, Trader Joes, Costco — they’re all some of the exemplars of how to operate a supermarket and give customers what they want,” Marks says.
And what customers want, Marks says, is fresher foods.
“Today’s consumer is more and more rejecting packaged and processed foods, foods with long ingredient lists, unpronounceable ingredients, kind of things that they don’t recognize. So they’re moving more toward a fresh format,” he notes.
